How to post pics

I finally got on here and was going to post a pic for my avatar and maybe some of my family....seems the pics on my computer are "too big"...is there a way to resave them and shrink them so they will fit???

So after "playing" with it for an hour I finally got my pic small enough for the avatar, but still not able to upload family photos. I even emailed them to myself so I could shrink them. I can't think of any other tricks. BTW my avatar photo got squished a little.
