Questions about surgery
OK, 4 days untill my first appointment. I'm getting nervous thinking about everything. I have a few questions. 1) Did you have a NG tube when you came out of surgery? How long did they keep it in? 2) Did you have stitches or staples? (never had staples before) 3) Did you have to go home with the drain in or did they remove it before you left the hospital? 4) Did you have to use antibiotic ointment on your incisions? I found out with my last surgery on my face/neck that I am allergic to it. I had really bad contact dermatitis, it was HORRIBLE!! I think that's about it. I'm sure I will think of more as soon as I hit the submit button. Thanks, Angy
Ok Keep in mind my dr. was Dr Hornbostel (great surgeon btw) anyhow. 1. no they did not use an ng tube 2. I didn't have stitches or staples, he just put this sorta clear plastic tape over the incisions, that came off around the 3rd day in the shower. 3. NO DRAIN, 4. no type of antibiotic creams or ointments whatsoever. My surgery was RNY laproscopically on 04/07/08. hope yours goes as well. Good luck, Susan p.s all these questions you just asked, write them down as you think about them and put the paper in your purse to take to the dr. with you, do it NOW before you forget lol

Don't be nervous about your appt. When I went all they did was weigh me and take my medical history and then I saw Dr Suttemoeller and he told me what test he wanted me to have. They will schedule them or you can have your pcp schedule them (which is what I did and then took them in the results) don't have the results faxed to them because they tend to lose things...Dr Suttemoeller is very nice and easy to talk to. He can answer most of your questions without you even asking.lol...If by chance you smoke better stop now cause they won't even consider the surgery until you are smoke free for 6 weeks...I learned the hard way. Good luck on your journey...
Angy...I wore my drain tube home and they took it out when I went back for my 1 week apt.....I had staples in all my cuts except for my drain site and it had stitches....Don't fret over them, they are not bad and it didn't hurt when they took them out....I didn't use ointment, I showered, patted sites dry and rebandaged them....And wearing the drain tube was not super bad and I think it's great if your doctor chooses to use it cause it helps all that yuck drain out. They can also tell a few different things by having the drain in...
I agree you should write all your questions down and speak to the nurse or doctor about them....they will be glad to answer them for you and it may make you feel better hearing it from them...
I don't think there is a person on the board that didn't get nervous thru this or have questions they wanted to know about.....So ask away...It's your right and your body!!
Hope things go great at your appt...Will be waiting for you to post and let us know how it went....

I didn't have any tubes...except the catheter for the first day. My stitches were the dissolving kind and all on the inside. Just had clear bandages covering on the outside. To look at me you wouldn't know i'd had surgery except for the 6 little lines on my belly. Hope yours is as simple, but don't fret if it's not.
