Attended post op meeting...does it get better?

Good morning everyone! Last night hubby and I attended a post-op support group meeting as it is a requirement by my surgeon to attend one before surgery. There was a huge crowd which was great. The topic was protein supplements so we were able to sample different bars, puddings and drinks. The problem is this....I was bored out of my mind!!! I didn't know anyone and no one really talked to me. I'm kinda shy and have social anxiety so I rarely will initiate conversations in a large crowd. (I know, I need to get over it) I am just wondering, will it be different for me after I have had surgery? Will I be more into it? I'm just wondering if it is worth the time if I will be bored every meeting. Plus, I live in Clinton and the meetings are near the plaza in KC. So that's over an hour's drive. Is there another meeting I can attend? This meeting is just for my surgeon's patients. Are all other meetings just for that surgeon's patients. I even considered trying to start a meeting here in Clinton. I'm just rambling now. So, tell me what you think? What are other meetings like? Brandy

I have found that most really organized meetings bore me out of my mind too. lol I want to hear real stuff from real people that have been there done that so they can help me thru what ever it is im going thru. Our meeting we have in Springfield the Circle of Friends support meeting is never structured and is like a group of friends meeting and talking. that is what i like and i am sure there are some that will be much closer to you.  No most meetings are not for just that surgeons patients.... So dont give up....anyone on here that knows of a meeting closer to her that is friendlier and more loving give her a buzz...

I really like the idea that they had sample tasting of products.  Jan does the group in Springfield ever do this?  I am in the process of being approved and have looked at many products, but haven't bought anything.  All of it seems expensive and testing before hand would really help!  Like OP, I am an hour from Osage Beach and an hour 15 from Springfield.  I do have family in Springfield to visit and I doctor there some.  When is the Springfield Meetings?

the normal springfield meeting that i go to are on the fourth Monday of every month at the library center on South Cambell. this month it is on tuesday after the fourth monday becasue of memorial day. this one is on the 27th at 6:30 watch for Glennas post about the Circle of Friends support meeting. ok?  Yes we have samples every once in a while..also if someone has sent off for samples they usually bring some things to meeting. i am bringing a couple samples of the Nectar protein, and i think Brenda is too. I can bring any one that wants one a sample of the ON protein powder that i use. if you are going to be at the Springfield  COF meeting. that is the one that i like best. i have tried lots of them and this is my favorite.  MeAgain where do you live??? I live about an 1 1/2 hour away from the meeting but i love them so much that i drive that , just save up lots of things that i need to do in Springfield on those days and most of the time go early so i can get a lot of it done and usually go to wal mart after the meeting to shop lol

Jan, I live in Waynesville, MO.  I may try to attend the meeting on the 27th.   I would love to try the Nectar Protein and also the "ON" protein that you use--never heard of it.  Where do you purchase yours from?

I have family in Springfield and would be able to incorprate a visit and a support meeting.  I go to Springfield quite a bit.

Hi Brandy you're also more than welcome to attend our meeting in Osage Beach.  We meet at the library.  Our next meeting is June 11th @ 10am.  Also we will be having a Clothing Exchange/Pot Luck Lunch on June 7th which you are more than welcome to attend.  We are bringing clothes we SHRANK out of and finding "new" ones.  Even if you don't have anything to bring you're still more than welcome to attend.  We'd love to have you. ~Angie!

I'm Dr. Price's patient too and had to attend a meeting.  I went last month and really enjoyed it.  They were celebrating those that had lost at least 100 lbs.  Very inspiring.   It doesn't bother me that no one talked to me.  I too have trouble starting a conversation with someone.   No matter how good the group is, driving up from Clinton with current gas prices would cause me to find something closer. Hey Brandy!  What kind of surgery are you having?  There are two meetings in Sedalia.  One is lead by the Dr. and one is lead by a patient.  Both of those meetings are geared toward RNY patients, so if you're a Lap Band patient, I don't know of any... The Dr. one is more formal, the patient one is less formal.  Do you know where the hospital is in Sedaila?  Call 660-827-0423 (Dr. Hornbostel's office) and ask about the days and times.  You DO NOT have to be a Hornbostel patient to attend the seminars.   There are a few people who go to those seminars from this forum... Myself, Nancy, and Meg for sure, and I don't know about anyone else.  If we know you're coming, we can seek YOU out to initiate the conversation!   I hope all goes well for you and that you find a group you like!

Brandy, I also attended the meeting last night on nutritional supplements.  I suppose it depends on your personality type.  I rather enjoyed it and I went alone.  I have one last visit with Thelma and Trish at the end of the month and it will conclude my 3-month plan.  I would have liked more handouts and discussion of each supplement.  I'll mention it to them on my last visit.  With the price of gas, it looks like there's a couple of groups you could meet up with closer to home.   I suppose as we get closer to surgery dates more information is related as to how much of a supplement and why it's needed.
