post surgery swelling

Hey Gang-

I'm still feeling great- but here's the deal-

Before surgery I'd lost 25 pounds. After surgery, naturally I was swelled and they don't weigh you before you go home from Bothwell. I got home and in 4 days I'd gained 15 pounds back! I knew from reading that a lot of people have swelling and all that after surgery and not to get alarmed about it. Well, it has now been 7 days, and I'm still carrying that 15 pounds around!

I'm NOT happy! hahhaha

Doc. took me off all my medications, but said I might maybe have to go back on Lasix. I am just determined to stay off it. But, after 7 days and no end in site, it looks like I might need to take a dose. I can't get my rings off, my left ankle is back to it's old blowed-up self, and my mid section feels like I'm a sponge. My incisions feel 'tight' by evening time.

Tonight I wrote Margie that unless she has a problem with it, I'm going to take 40mg's of Lasix tonight and 20 each morning until Tuesday when I see Dr. Hornbostel for my 1-week check-up.

I am drinking, water, ice chips, crystal light, sf jello, sf popsicles, and chicken broth bullion cubes (but only twice a day because they are sooo high in sodium it's unreal). Plus I am using protein bullets to get my protein in. Also my vitamins. So, I know I'm being excellent in my diet, it's not the food/drinking swelling me.

I've taken Lasix for over 20 years, could my body just be so used to it that I'm having a hard time throwing off the fluid naturally now?

Does anyone else have this experience- I was so proud to have lost that 25 pounds and my left ankle be almost normal size again! Boy was that ever short-lived!

I'm headed to bed, I am so behind on my e-mail - we've been sooo busy around here after being gone for almost a week--- everything I look at is needing my attention, but my stamina is not quite built back up to normal yet, but I know it's coming....

It's great to read everyone's post.... so much excitment going on!  By next week I hope to be back in my normal swing and able to post more- we have company from Canada coming in and little at a time I'm getting the house clean...ha!

The water weight is normal, the same thing happened to me, it took about 10 day's before it started coming off. I think our bodies are in survival mode (starvation) due to low calories and just doesn't want to give up anything it can get it's grimy little hands on lol. It will come off, it has too, don't panic! I really hope you can avoid the lasix , though maybe because your body is used to it, it'll be o.k, but you will have to drink as much as you can get down to flu**** out. Let us know how your doing, it sounds like your doing great! other than the edema.

Brenda because you are so use to the lasix you may need it for a short while is the 40mg a usuas dose or is that less than normal. Have you heard back from Margie yet?  I have a friend that was on it all the time before surgery and she had to sort of wean her body off of it afterwards ... Just be sure and drink as much as you can. the more water you can drink the less you will swell anyway. but you will need to drink to keep from geting dehydrated which is easy for us. I drink 6 to 8 16 oz of water a day and if it is hot outside and im out there all day i will start feeling like i am dehydrated.  Good to see you back at home and doing well , stop and nap during the day and let your body rest and get well ok? as well as you feel you have just had major surgery. be good to you. Love you Jan

I really think the Lasix is a good idea, it would have been nice to avoid it, but this kind of swelling doesn't sound good for you.  If your doc stated that you might have to go back on it, then it just sounds like he was right.  Glad you are starting out low, don't forget to watch your potassium.  But with that low dose your electrlytes should be fine until Tuesday.

Hey Ya'll,

Last night I took 40mg of Lasix and crushed the pill up, then I took a half-spoon full of jello and cut a little slit in it with the tip of a wet knife and put the crushed medicine in the little pocket I'd made. I swallowed some water to wet my throat good, then I just swallowed the jello straight down. I never tasted the medicine! It was going to taste so nasty if I tried to just put it on my tongue and wa**** down... so I was glad I thought of this.

I pee'd off 6 pounds last night, so that's a start.

I read somewhere that Lasix would keep blood sugars elevated, and I think it does for me. I was in the 130's yesterday morning and I'm in the 150 range this morning. So I'm not upping the dosage anymore, I need to talk to Dr. Hornbostel about this Tuesday when I go for my 1-week check-up. Dehydration is not something to play with on your own.

I have such thin hair and want to start taking Biotin when I can start taking pills again. I might just start crushing it and putting it in jello and sliding it down....... I'm probly not the first to think of this, but it sure works good for taking crushed medicines.

If I had not been reading others on OH...I would be sooo discouraged by now, but thanks to all of you, I know what’s going on and feel encouraged by the replies- I hope all your activities are blessed today!!!

Are you drinking the bullets straight or mixing it with something?  I had my surgery on May 1st.  I need to get the protein in.   Meg

Hey Meg-

Here is what I do cause I can't stand the taste of the bullets stright-

I have the orange flavored bullets.

In the blender,

3 ice cubes and blead them as much as you can with about a 1/4th cup water

1 orange sf popcicle

1 ounce of the bullet juice

than blend it all together as fine as possible.

It taste a lot better diluted like that.  I just eat it with a spoon like a icie.

Hi Brenda- I'm so glad you brought up the swelling and the lasix.  My surgery is coming up on June 16th and the edema has been a concern of mine. I've been on Lasix or some other form of Rx water pill for the last 20 years.  I ask my PCP about taking my 40 mg of Lasix after surgery and she said to just go by how I feel and how much I'm swelling.  That sounded all well and good until I remembered how bad they taste when they sit on my tongue and start to dissolve if I don't get them gulped down real quick. NASTY!!!  anyway, the secret pocket in the jello sound like a great idea.  I will surely remember that one.  By the way, I thought I was the only FREAK whose left foot and ankle swelled significantly more than the right.  It has been horrible this past week.  What's up with that???  Let us know if you get any good info from the doc.  Take care.  Julie
