I can't begin to tell you how happy I am to be surrounded by people with common sense on this forum.  I just spent a few minutes on the main forum board and couldn't believe the things I was reading...some of the "advice" /encouragement being given was incredible.  One gal was saying she was 2 1/2 weeks post op and having trouble getting her protein in... MORE THAN ONE person responded to her saying the docs don't expect you to get all your protein in and that a FEW grams a day was OK.   AHHHHH...I couldn't believe it....both as a nurse and a WLS post op.  Are there really some docs out there leaving their patients THAT uneducated????  I chimed in my opinion and told the girl I didn't agree with any of them and that she should be getting in her protein at  least 60gm a day...not a "few".  I'm just venting....I just hate it when people share stupidity that could be harmful.....Love you alll...............

I agree and yes there are surgeons out there that dont have a clue about what patients are to eat. I have even met and talked to a couple nutritionist that dont know. So yeah it is almost up the the wls patient to do their own digging about what they are suppose to do.

Well, it's a fine line disagreeing with a doctor - since I'm not one; but I can read, I am smart and do have common sense - and I do have a family doctor who listens, will go over my research with me to point out any errors in my findings and conclusions, and he also admitted that physicians do not get more than a class or two on nutrition their whole entire time in med school!!  So doctors do not know a lot about nutrition - period.   And sadly, just because they are great surgeons, and know how to perform this surgery, does not mean they all (some do - but not all) know how to advise their post-ops to eat and stay healthy.    There is absolutely no reason why a new post-op can not get in at least 30 grams of protein per day drinking a protein shake - and I believe could easily do more than that.  Liquids go down quickly and are absorbed very well.  If they mix their protein with water, I would count that as their water AND protein and they'd be good during this time.  They're healing - they NEED the protein.  Seriously NEED it!

I AGREE!  That's why I think it's sad that the folks on there are getting some pretty bad advice that could lead to some serious health problems.  Good sunday morning BTW!  LOL
