Kidney Infection and Kidney Stones

Now I had a Kidney Stone 2 years before surgery and now I have one that is on the move.  I went to the hospital last tuesday and they said I had blood in my urine and an infection.  So they put me on Vicodine for pain, Cipro for the infection, Ibprophen for the swelling and Flowmax to make me urinate more.  Well here I am almost 2 weeks later and I have not passed the stone and at 10 days after the Cipro I still have an infection.  They are sending my urine to be coltured to see what kind of infection I have before the throw more antibiotics at me, but they gave me more meds for the pain.  i also had CT scan to compare with the one from the hospital to see if the stone has moved.  They have to find out why I still have the infection and see if  it is damaging my kidney.  The worst case senario is it may go into shut down due to the infection.  I won't know about the infection till the colture comes back which will take a week.   Has anyone delt with this after surgery?  Has anyone lost a kidney and how does it effect your health and weight loss.  My PCP is concerned I am close to lossing 100 pounds already and I have lost 13 pounds in less then 3 weeks, since I saw him last.  Could this be due to the Kidney infection?   Anyone with any ideas or experience please let me know.  Thanks

Peace in all you do,
Bel

Bel: Wow, you have a lot going on.  I will add you to my prayer list.  I don't know anything about kidney stones or infections.  Hopefully, someone on the board can give you more answers. You say you are taking Ibuprofen for the swelling.  Ibuprofen contains ASPRIN which is  a BIG NO NO for those of us who have rny!!  I would check with your WLS surgeon before I took anymore of those!  Aspirin can cause ulcers in our new pouch which can lead to a Gastric Fistula which can be a major problem.  I’m sure there are other anti-inflammatory medicines they can suggest other than Ibuprofen.  Back in January I was hospitalized with bad pelvic pain and back pain.  They originally thought I had a Gastric Fistula; however, it turned out to be an internal hernia.  Dr. Hornbostel was able to repair easily and I am now doing fine.  Dr. H told me after rny never to take aspirin again. Hope some of this information helps you.  Congrats on your 100 lb weight loss!  Please keep us posted on how you are doing. Debbie D.

I have heard of WLS post-ops getting kidney stones, and apparently for some, it can develop into something more serious.  I found this OH thread in particular that addresses this.   Also, another thread that highlights and article from a doctor stating that kidney stones can be linked to insufficient calcium.  Increasing your calcium can thereby stop the kidney stone problem.   Another thread I found, one reply in particular brings up something else I keep bumping into on this:  drink water and eat low salt, low fat to avoid kidney stones.  Another reply in this same thread also again mentioned taking calcium citrate to help with them.   I too would suggest you avoid Ibuprofen.  We should not take that.  It can seriously damage our pouch.  A one time, very rarely here and there - it probably would not, but in situations like you're taking it, absolutely not a good thing hon.  I'd avoid the Ibuprofen and make sure you check with your surgeon or at least check yourself to know if what you're taking is safe for you as a WLS post-op.  Don't assume that your doctor will always know this.
