Liquid diet & taking medicine

I am 4 days into my liquid diet.  I'm doing fine emotionaly.  But, I take metformin and glyburide for diabetes and it is really keeping my stomack upset - I'm talking bad...not just a little.

Plus Dr. Hornbostel put me on an antibiotic (carithromyc 500 mg) and Priloce after my stomach scope.

If I didn't have stomach ulcers before, after taking all this on a empty stomach I will have them soon!

Taking all my medicine on a empty stomach is just giveing me gutt rot.  What do you guys do to take your medicine?  Would it help if I just ate one cracker with my pills???

Does it count as a meal if you drink a protein shake right after taking the pills?

Please advise what you did if you had problems with this-

Help!

Hi Brenda, I don't know the answer to your question as it obtains to the pre-op diet but I take both the diabetic meds you do and I know my Dr. told me taking them both with milk will help, and it sure seems to... so maybe you could take your meds with the shakes and it would help you too. My meds are once in the am and once in the pm so it works out with the shakes if I want to use them for meals.  You could call them and ask.   My husband and I both use Dr. H. for other health related problems. I had my gall bladder out last summer and he did the surgery.  Unfortuatently our insurance does not cover the hospital for WLS. I have been thinking and praying for you!  I pray this will work out real soon, you will get the answers you need and not be in discomfort over this any longer! bec

Thanks for the reply Bec, seems since no one else has posted a reply, no one knows what to do...? I tell you it got so bad last night that I ate a half slice of deli white turkey meat and then took my meds. It worked and the problem subsided. So I may have to eat something with my meds- and I don't see what I ate as a problem since it was a protein.... I thought about eating a cracker, but thought that eating a protein would be the better choice. Not eating is not the issue...I'm fine with that, it's the living on the potty that is driving me crazy! Plus, if it's doing this to me, I know it is also being very hard on the lining of my stomach.

I covet your prayers, thank you so much for them. Hopefully you will get to have your surgery soon- it took me almost 2 years to get all this going. So don't give up!

Hey Sheila, I don't think it's the antibiotic doing it, I think it's my diabetes medicines.  If my numbers would get lower I'd stop them while on the liquid diet, but I dont' dare do that.  I'll go to the Dr. Monday probly to find out what to do.  I've e-mailed Margie but not rec'd a reply.

Hi Sheila, I am sorry about your metformin problem , I had the same thing with it, It didn't matter weather I ate or not, I just started downing tons of kaopectate or pepto bismal, it did help. After the first 3 day's of the liquid my numbers have been around 150 , down from 300"s even with the metformin. Do you also take januvia? it doesn't tear up the tummy , I was supposed to take them both, but I would frequently skip the met for the same prob. as you, the januvia helped keep the numbers a little lower. Also the extended release met. was a little better too. Good luck I hope you get to stop taking it soon, been there done that, It's not fun!!

I didn't think I should take Pepto Bismal or Kaopectate since Im' taking the Prylosec (sp?) Hornbostel prescribed after my belly scope-........hum......  Wonder if it would be ok?

better ask i guess. How high has your  blood sugars been? is it dropping at all?

Yes, the blood sugar is dropping slowly. I started out almost to 300 fasting, not I'm at 240 fasting. I ate a half a turkey slice a while ago, took my medicines, and bam...the 'need for speed' is back...aurgh! Maybe I am going to have to space them out over the day. I take am and pm meds so I always just talk them all together. Except the calcium and vit. those I split up. I'm supposed to -right?

It's so nice outside, think I'll work on flowers some, but not too far from the potty!
