I"ve noticed that everyone takes a bunch of vitamins,irons,b-complex etc. I'm only 4 months out ,but all I've been taking is centrum silver twice a day, citrical petits twice a day and B-12 3 -4 times a week. The thing is I feel great . Of course, I do my protein shakes and I get plenty of fluids and I exercise, so my question is , Is anyone else out there whose out a lot further taking just the bare minimum? I'll be doing my blood work in 2 months and that will tell a lot too, but like I said I feel great. Just curious. Connie

Well here's the thing about vitamins and minerals:  you can feel fine now, and may feel fine for quite a long time, but your body may not be doing fine.  We are not absorbing all we're taking in.  We are essentially losing ground in the nutrient department right out the starting gate of our surgeries, unless we supplement fully and properly and this would not be based on how we feel.  And in the case of calcium in particular, it can even take a while to show up in our labs as to how bad off we really are.   This can actually be true of iron and protein as well, and possibly other nutrients.  It's much better to take them and keep the labs up, and I mean in the really good range, than to wait until they are low - possibly even dangerously, critically, life-threateningly low - and to then try and get them back up.    Your labs should be an indicator of how well you're doing with your supplementation routine and if you need to tweak it a bit to get your labs in a more optimum range;  your labs should not be your call to freak out because your labs are so bad, and then decide to start a supplementation routine.     Always supplement fully and completely because we need it:  use the labs to tweak the amount you need and possibly add something your body might need (like extra zinc, over and above what's in your multi-vitamin, or something like that).

I do the tropical oasis liquid B complex and liquid calcium...have you ever tried a crushed vitamin??  and I do the centrum chewable.  Dr Hornbostel told me I could go back to taking caps and tabs on April 14 which is exactly one month post op...at that time he will start me on my B12 shots as well.  I really like the liquids...i will probably stay on them...i know calcium tabs are pretty big and i just don't want to take any chances.
