I am 24 days out from surgery. At this point how many calories a day should I be having. And what is a good protien number at this point?

I have been averaging about 600 calories and about 40-45 gr. of protien. Am I doing ok? Thanks, Tammy V.

Tammy at this point in your journey dont worry about the calories , you cant eat enough to make you not gain weight,,,,but do try to get in more protein shakes. did you read Tracies post about protein shakes, makes a lot of sence and i know that when i get in 2 or 3 a day i feel so much better. I cant get in the amount of protein i need for the amount of food i eat. especially meats. they just dont want to go down good.  what kind of protein shakes do you use? try to up the amount of them spread out over the day. ok i think you would see a real drop in your weight using this method.

Jan, I have been having the SF Carnation Instant Breakfast and adding one scoop of Body Fortress protien powder from Walmart. It's ends up being 250 calories and 31 gr. of protien. I been having about one a day.I make it with a cup of skim milk. Tammy V.

Tammy check the carbs and sugar in the carnation instant breakfast. there are better protein powders with out having to add the carnation instant breakfast to it....The one i use is called  ON 100%whey protein powder, you can find it online if you dont have a place that sells it around there. one scoop is 34 gms protein, 1gram sugar and 3 grams carbs...i use the vanilla flavored and i can add things to it but if you are a choc freak they have one called double fudge and Rocky road both are good if you are crazy about choc.  with your cup of milk they are then 42 grams of protein... if you have 3 of them a day you are getting in 126 grams of protein a day...calories per drink would be  120 plus the amount of your milk...Read Tracis post about how she does her day, even tho you cant eat much in those meal times, I cant either maybe you can do something similiar.

Jan, I was just using the carnation drink cuz it was on the list from Dr. H. that I can have right now. Maybe I would be better off just having the protien powder shake without the carnation drink. The kind I have is 26 gr. for one scoop and 52 gr. for two on the protien. And 100cal and 210 cal. 3gr carbs and 6gr.carbs per scoop,1gr. and 3gr of sugar. Plus the skim milk. I think I might try it next time without the carnation. And no I am not a chocolate freak, right now I am kind of sick of chocolate so I might get the vanilla flavor next. My son has ordered some unflavored protien powder for me. It should be here today. So I can add that to other stuff too. Can you get to much protien in a day?lol Thanks Jan, Tammy V.

i dont think so , different studies say you can only take in and use about 30 grams of protein in a hour but nothing i have read says you can get too much. just know that the more you get in the less your body will feed off of muscle tissure and will go after the fat when losing weight. and the water you drink at least 65 oz a day will flush the body of the fat cells etc.

Hi, I haven't had surgery yet, but I also buy the whey choc too, I get 90 scoops at sam's for 28 dollars, I put it in oatmeal, and it makes a great milk shake, next time I may buy vanilla, I have heard people say the vanilla is good in fruit/cottage cheese etc, your doing great on the weight loss, Jan, you always have helpful info, keep up the good work, B
