Would someone explain to me in plain English the difference between IBS and dumping.

Thelma,    I never have had IBS but it was explained to me that when you eat for example lettuce etc, or whatever food bothers you, you have to go to the bathroom withing a short time.  Dumping  is hard to explain but I know how I felt when I did it one time for sure.  I did not have to go to the bathroom but I had tremendous pains in my stomach that lasted about 2 hours.  It was after I had consumed something with sugar.  This has probably not helped you much.  I think an overdose in sugar alcohols  can cause this also.  Colette       I also know if I eat something with sugar, it effects me to the point that I can get so sleepy I have to go and lie down.

I will try! IBS is a problem with the colon, they told me that is what I had when I couldn't finish eating for running to the bathroom.  There are lots of reasons for it, Chornes Desease and other colon issues.  Some people have the runs from nerves too, and it bacicly is just the trots.  Dumping is from the gastric-by-pass surgery and it is because you no longer have the pulary valve on your stomach to regulate your out flow from your pouch.  So when you eat, ice cream or other high fatty food it gets all bubblly in your pouch and it runs out of the pouch into the intestines. Which is why they call it dumping.  Which because it goes into the colon in a hurry usually causes you to go to the bathroom in a hurry. I hope that help you understand the differance.  It really isn't anything alike except the end result. hummm what a pun. I had IBS so that was just 1 of the reasons I choose the DS instead of the RNY.  Marylin 314/180/150

I don't want to imply you get dumping from ice cream or high in fat foods, you can get it from any food that reacts differently in the pouch.  Dumping isn't the same thing you get from eating sugars that cause you to have high levels of insulin and then bottoming out an crashing.  Different feelings but bad just the same.  Gas pains are different also, they are not very comfy, all I can say about all that is it does get better with time. I hope I have helped.  It is confussing I know.   Also wanted to wish you the best on your journey. Marylin

I have IBS and I also dump.  Unfortunately, neither of these conditions are exactly the same for every person. With IBS you can have IBS with constipation or IBS with diarrhea.  When I had an IBS attack, I would have intense pain in the lower intestines, nausea, rapid heart rate, break out in a sweat and feel as though I was going to pass out.  I also call them my "potty days" because I have to stick close to the bathroom, as things, uh, move quickly on those days.  If you get my meaning.    This is how it is with me and IBS.  For someone else, it may be different.  The pain and feeling like I was going to pass out were some of my most overwhelming feelings during an attack.  My first ever IBS attack happened while I was pregnant, so you can imagine my concern - thinking it was pregnancy related.  It was not and has continued on since then.  Dumping, for me, occurs if I eat anything high in fat or high in sugar.  Moreso with things high in sugar.  Ice cream absolutely does me in.  I tried it once, no - twice.  Lord what was I thinking!!  Truly, it's an awful experience that I will not repeat.  For me, dumping includes:  horrible stomach fullness, pain higher up in my pouch area, gassy, nausea, jittery and usually a rapid heartbeat. The key difference for me between IBS and dumping is that with dumping I usually do not throw-up or have diarrhea:  I just feel like I would.   IBS involves the lower intestines, and dumping (for me) usually involves the pouch area, when it comes to where the pain is located anyway.  I view dumping as:   my body going through this rejection of a food ingredient that it does not know how to process or what to do with and it's having a violent reaction and I have to basically live through it until it's over.

Well, I dont eat very many sugary things. I do have episodes of having to run to the bathroom like minutes ago. I do have the stomach cramping, bloating and gas pain.  I have been to the emergency room on two occasions, and they did a CAT scan on both occasions.  I did buy some Gas-x strips that melt on your tongue, and they have helped with the gas problem. I just dont like the idea of not knowing whether it is going to be gas or an emergency bathroom visit. My doctor actually thought that I might have develped a food allergy, and that it might be causing the problem.  I keep my anti-diarrheal medicine, my pepto bismol tablets, my gas-x and my pain medicine on hand.  I do know that I had extreme abdominal pain when I ate an apple that had the peel on it. I will never do that again. I guess that it is a trial and error thing.
