Bob McQueen - MO - Monday, 10/22 Update

Missouri Board, I had the opportunity to visit with BobMcQueen this past weekend in St. Louis.  At present time he's at Kindred Hospital, a rehabilitation facility with the primary goal of weaning Bob off of the ventilator.  The weaning off consists of him breathing on his own for increasing periods of time then back on the ventilator until such time that he can eventually breathe on his own without the assistance of the ventilator.  Bob joked at times they give him pure oxygen and he REALLY likes that!  He was talking just fine, but the more he talked his breathing got labored.  He was battling some chest congestion, and while his coughs are productive,  they are very uncomfortable for him.   Bob said he  insists on  getting up to walk twice daily in addition to any therapy  they  provide to him...he feels the more he can get up and moving the quicker he can recover. Now on to the fistula.  He's still having issues with the fistula and he's got a wound vac attached to catch the fluid.  I have to admit I was surprised at the sheer amount of drainage he had.  Doctors at this time still do not know where the drainage is specifically coming from and Bob was suppposed to have a scan done within the next few days of my visit to see if they can isolate the problem area. His spirits are good!  And while he's gone through this ordeal, he says his decision to get his WLS was a good one because he had little confidence he could live without it...but he said with so much time laying around thinking that he does second guess the decision at times.  Bob said he hopes one day to look back on the entire experience and be able to say that it was all worth it. I was impressed by the questions Bob was asking.  Questions regarding post-op life after WLS, when do you resume normal activities, how long before you can drive, when can you start working out, food choices early on.  So in spite of what he's going through now - he's thinking forward to getting back to normal life and being a successful post-op.  Bob has only seen his kids once since his surgery and misses them, but he said they are what drives him to get better.  This we already know, but he also mentioned how much of a rock that his wife Lori has been for him and how he couldn't have made it without her.  He is so fortunate to have Lori - she is clearly an amazing woman! Priorities right now are to get Bob off the ventilator in the next two weeks and a decision needs to be made as to where he goes next.  The other priority is obviously getting the fistula under control as it has not improved. More news as I receive it....I hope to be able to visit him very soon once again!  In the meantime I'll likely hear from Lori at which time I'll pass along what I know. Hello to all associated with this wonderful program.  I joined recently to share what I know about Bob McQueen.   He is a dear friend as well as my spiritual leader.  He continues to progress in his healing, but it has been slow and wearying, for him, his dear wife, and his extended family.  Think of it..........it is almost 5 months since he underwent his surgery.  Although he was allowed to be at home, the times there were short and once again he is a patient at the Missouri hospital, at Columbia.  He asked me to show the address there and hopes he will hear from some of you.
