Hi all,
I am having what i consider a huge problem.. I am doing the protein liquid diet 100 percent, my surgery date is a week away, but I have been on liquid for 10 days now. I weighed last thursday, and I really have lost my appetite, have to remind myself to get my shakes in. I am getting beteween 400 and 600 calories a day and I have gained 3 lbs since last thursday. Why is this bothering me. I have ALWAYS had a hard time losing weight, really hard, and I know I am getting the same protein i will after surgery and if I can lower my calories by this much on my own and not lose weight, why would the surgery help? I am not by any means trying to back out of it, but I do NOT want to have surgery and not lose the weight either.. I am hoping somebody has an answer here but I don't know what it would be. I am surely frustrated. No, I havent cheated on the liquid diet either.
Cindy first of all I want to tell you I wish you the best with your surgery. Don't give up the fight.
If you are on a liquid diet for medical purposes you can still gain weight. Maybe you are not getting enough and your body is going in the starvation mode. If this is the case then you WILL gain weight . I would call your doctor and let him know what is going on.
Here is a site I came across...maybe you will find the answers you are looking for.....

Yes, Dr D put me on the liquid diet, all his patients get it, but my question is if I am in starvation mode, and I understand this, BUT i will be eating the same thing after surgery for a long time, so what will change that? I am just trying to understand everything now, my body is definitely a fighter. How are you not in starvation mode after surgery?
THanks again
no you wont be on slim fast after surgery,, that stuff i dont know why they put you on it there are other things that are much better. and you wont be able to drink it after surgery since it has way too many carbs in it as well as sugar. so dont worry you will lose weight. I too had never been able to lose by just cutting calories but i sure did after surgery. Hang on it will happen. dont worry. Jan

Cindy,
Have you ever had your thyroid checked or your insulin level I'm not talking about your sugar level but your insulin levels? I too was having a difficult time losing any weight and found out a year ago after my dr. checked my insulin level that I was insulin resistant and that was why I wasn't losing weight. She put me of medication basically it's a diabetic drug but it helps. You might want to have your dr. check these things out if you haven't already. Hopes this helps.

Bev,
yes my insulin is way high and i am insulin resistant, was on Byetta but i wasnt losing and i stopped it because of the surgery.. I would have assumed surgery would correct that problem?
Yep, yep - that was me too: I was insulin resistant BIG TIME. Then went full blown Type II diabetic. I was put on Glucophage, and lost a small bit of weight, but still, it's really really tough to lose weight with metabolic syndrome/syndrome X. Which is why I had such a hard time losing weight before this surgery.
I lost all of my excess weight and have kept it off and have not re-gained any. You will do fine!!!! Stick with the program. Take your supplements!!!!!! Then you'll do awesome and lose your excess weight. I could not have lost this weight without the surgery.
