Hi, I am having surgery on June 6th and I am wondering how long the pain will be there. Was anyone here able to drive home after the surgery?  Thanks :) Cheryl

Cherle No you cant drive yourself home after surgery. they dont want you to drive untill you have been off all narcotic pain meds for at least a week.

I was in hardly any pain at all. I never took even liquid tylenol once they took my pain pump away i never needed any thing else.

That isnt to say that others dont have pain but i was one of the really lucky ones that didnt.

I hope you will post as often as you would like an let us know how you are doing. I want to welcome you to the board and also to welcome you to post on my post of Whats happening daily. So glad to meet you . Do you have an angel yet?

Good luck

Jan

Jan~ I figured (about the narcotics)---but I wasn't sure. I have transportation to and from but was trying to make it easier on the checkbook (the way gas prices are). Thank you for replying so quickly.  I don't have an angel yet....I'm angeless  (LOL).  Thanks again, Cheryl

Cheryl, I read somewhere on some board that a bandster drove herself home from the hospital but I think Jan is right about the narcotic pain med and also it would depend on how far you had to drive.  I had very little pain, took the liquid Vicodin twice and it made me pass out so that was the end of that.  I really didn't need it.  Just plan to take it easy for a few days, no lifting etc.  Keep coming on our board, it is the coolest. Hugs, Lana

Hi Cheryl, Who is your surgeon? I had Dr. Fearing up there and I love her! Just curious-anyhow-I had a pretty long drive-over 4 hrs (they got that horrible ice storm then, so It was 7-8 hr drive then) anyhow-they told me NO driving afterwards for a week or more. I dont think they will let you drive home, even if its close because of all the things in your system-and a lot of people have problems with being light headed etc (lack of calories etc)....do you have someone to drive you? I hope so. Take care and have a good day :) and good luck-I will be praying for you.  Janet

Hi Cheryl,  Welcome to the Mo. Board.  Dr's don't want you driving til the narcotics are out of you system. (While you are in the hospital they will give you narcotics for the pain). And then my Dr. added even though I did not take narcs at home to not plan on driving for the first week. Pain wise I did not need anything past my first night at home, which I took a tylenol suppository. Energy wise is where I had a problem, I did not have my energy back for about 4 to 5 weeks, then again I did have a leak three days out from surgery. Plan on taking it easy for a while, the pain I did have was left abdominal where the Dr attached my old stomach and around my drain site. Do you know if you are having a drain? My drain probably saved me from becoming septic, but others do not agree with having a drain as a benifit. Every case is very individualized.  Take good care of yourself and go by the Dr. instructions, and by all means do not hesitate to call your Dr about concerns. Good luck with your surgery. Hugs, Tara
