I am on the dr. supervised diet and I lost another 2.5 lbs this last week. I hate having to be on a 6 month dr. supervised diet is there any way around this? I feel like I'm just delaying my surgery and in the mean time suffering from physical problems when I could have the surgery and be on my way to losing and feeling better all around why do they put you through this mess? Beverly, I know how you feel. I told my husband that if I died during that six months I expected him to sue everyone who caused me that wait. That said, there was no way I could get out of it. You would have to talk to your insurance and find out if it is their requirement or the employers and then go from there. I think you're doing great losing on the diet. I didn't lose hardly anything, my BMI would have gotten too low to have surgery if I had. However, I did learn new habits and I exercised faithfully and I think it helped me to be in better shape to have the surgery. Good luck either way, waiting or getting an exception. Hugs, Lana

Lana, It's not my employers requirement because I don't have insurance through them so it must just be the insurance requirement which really bites!!!! I am on my second month and 6 monts seems so long why couldn't it have been like 3 months? I think it's stupid but I do have to lose a little to get my BMI down under 60 so that they will do the surgery on me which I don't have far to go now. I do think that exercising and eating healthy is good to do before having the surgery but for 6 months..... that's for the birds!!!! LOL.... Bev~

You sound just like Lana before when she had to do the supervised diet and exercises. She moaned and groned till she got use to it and then she loved the exercising and i guess got use to the diet. Ask her. We all laughed at her now when she talks about loving to exercise. lol Sorry and yeah i think the diet thing is pretty stupid they act like we got fat like this and have never tried not one little bit to get any of it off. Predudice is what it is. Jan

Well, I'd probably call the insurance company and try to find a nice person to talk to. If you do, get his/her name and after the first time ask for them and wait to talk to them so that you build a relationship. Explain to them that you are willing to try to lose weight but that realistically you know from your past history that you won't be able to lose enough and keep it off and that your life is being put in danger by waiting longer. Keep stressing that they are causing you to be in a life threatening position. Don't get mad, just sound really compliant and yet so anxious about your health. If you have any co-morbidities, bring them up and remind them that those are just getting worse as you wait. You have to be prepared not to get mad, no matter what they say. My DH kept telling me "Don't **** them off because they have all the power". I do know one woman who got it waived so it isn't totally impossible. I didn't really try, but I did talk to the insurance nearly monthly for reassurance because I kept feeling as if they were going to deny me after I did the six months. My insurance has now changed, as of 2007, to a 12 month supervised diet and exercise program so I'm lucky I got to have mine in 2006. Hope this helps, Hugs, Lana

Thanks Lana, I do have co-morbidities so I'm going to try that and I won't get mad and **** them off because I know they think they have all the power but they don't only God does so I'm sure if it was meant to be then things can be changed!!!!! Bev~

Honestly the main reason insurance companies require a diet is to weed out people who dont have the follow thru to finish the diet and get surgery. They dont expect you to lose weight. It's a delaying tactic. I wi**** was for your own good that they want you to try the diet but it's not. It may also be to see if you can follow thru with a diet which you will have to do after surgery. I actually know a girl who weighs over 450 and just gave up when they required a 6month supervised diet. You can do it. At least you know in a few months surgery will happen for you. There are so many who are completely excluded by their insurance company. I wish you much luck. You'll be on this losers bench in no time and it will be worth the wait. Dannielle

My insurance company requires the same thing. But they did have an exception. If the WLC I was working with had an approved 3 month multi faceted pre surgery regime. Which mine does and Patsy at DePaul already knew my insurance would accept rather then the 6 month diet. Check with your WLC and see if they have had people use your insurance and if they know of an exception. I feel the same way you do it's just delaying me further but it is also giving me a chance to give up things I won't eat after surgery and lose a little weight to make the surgery easier. I have detoxed from caffine and I'm working on things with lots of surgar and then moving on to foods with lots of carbs. So by the time I have my surgery I will be ready for the liquid diet before and the after and not jones too badly for the things I have to give up because I have already done that. Think of it that way. Hugs, Bel
