Seeking Insurance Approval

Hello everyone. I am so ready to go forward with the laparascopic roux n y. I've turned in all my documentation to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. They are requesting that I submit to them a one-year, physician-supervised, documented weight loss plan. I'm trying not to become discouraged. Can someone out there offer me any advice? Please help!

Lynette, Please don't be discouraged. I had to complete a six months physician supervised diet and exercise program before I could get approval and the surgery is so worth it that I'm ashamed I griped so much about the six months. If you have any records that your physician talked to you about diet and that he weighed you and/or counseled you about dieting it might work. Check with him. Mine Ins wouldn't count Weigh****chers, Jenny Craig, NutriSystem or any commercial weight loss plan. Just my physician. If you have to wait a year and jump through their hoops, do it. I know it is frustrating to have to wait a year but try to put in perspective. You know that in a year you can be approved. There are so many who will never get the opportunity to have this surgery. Find out exactly what kind of documentation they want ,then go to your doctor and get started. Some insurance companies want the doctors notes to be detailed some dont. You need to know so that you have all of your info ready in a year from now. They aren't expecting you to lose weight .They want to see if you have the follow thru to do it for a year. So many people just give up and dont follow thru. It the insurance companies way of weeding out some people . Its a game and it sucks but you can play it and win. Dont get discouraged. We will be with you this year as much as you let us be.It will give you a lot of time to gather information,meet some great friends and hear about other people's experiences. I waited almost 2 years before I was able to get on a plan with coverage. My policy had an airtight exclusion. We are here for you. Stick arond and get to know us. You'll be so glad you did. Dannielle
