Hi Kim...congrats on your date!! My name is Debbie or Deb M on here.
I had Lap Band Surgery with Dr. Hornbostel back in January and I have lost over 30lbs. I didn't have the sleep or the pulmonary test but I can tell you about them.
With these tests they are testing your breathing, making sure your a candidate for surgery, trying to find co-morbilities (reasons for needing WLS, for insurance purposes) or seeing if you need help with your breathing due to your weight, making sure that your in the best of health for surgery. The hoops are no big deal, we all did them! Some had more than others and each Doctor and insurance company have different ideas on the tests you need. Don't worry about any of them, just jump the hoops and keep focused on your goal! It will be here before you know it!
The sleep test, my hubby had done because he has a heart issue. You go to a sleep clinic, usually at a hospital and stay over night. They let you go the next morning. They hook a bunch of little sensors to your head and body to watch different things that your body does while you sleep. They watch your vitals - heart, b/p and breathing, the sensors pick up on little things like brain waves, breathing, heart flutters, body ticks...just weird stuff. What they are mainly looking for is to see if you have sleep apnea...the rest I think is just for something that docs and nerds like to look at but that's just my opinion...lol Sleep apnea is a co-morbility that usually makes insurance companies okay the patient for surgery. The pulmonary test is a bunch of breathing test to see how deep you breath, how much oxygen your getting into your system...stuff like that, again no biggy! They just want to know as much about your body as they can find out before surgery so you will be at your best on your day of surgery and for your recovery!
I hope that helps...Deb M
