Dr De La Torre / Dr Scott People? I just want to know how you like them, I
RNY on 01/06/15
am scheduled for my first seminar soon and am just hoping this all works out. I really need the surgery but am so scared. I had a blood clot after surgery one time and it scares me to think about surgery. I hear there are things they can do if they know the risk though... I just can't live this way anymore..
What kind of diet do they put you on priori to the surgery?
Thanks and I look forward to getting to know all of you
Hi Cindy
I have Dr. Scott and should be able o answer a few of your questions. I am getting closer to getting my surgery. I had to jump through a few extra hoops but thats ok i wanna make sure I am ready. When you go to your seminar they will weigh you and bacause they want to know you're serious about your surgery when you go back to see them you cannot weigh over what you did at the seminar. Then you just need to maintain that weight. They will give you a packet telling you what needs to be done. I tried to get most everything done before my first appt. After your first appt. they may or maynot have a few other things that need to be done. As you get closer to being scheduled for your surgery they will tell you that two weeks prior to surgery you need an all liquid diet. I know thats going to be hard but it'll be worth it. You can also drink protein shakes during that time. As for the blot clots I am sure there is a regimin they follow to try and not let them happen again. Lastly, try not to be scared which ever surgeon you go with will be great they are both wonderful Dr's. I am going with Dr. Scott don't really know why it's just who some people had had great experiences with so I chose him.
Hope this helps
Michelle
Hi Cindy..I am using Dr.Scott. He is really nice and did not seem to answer the questions I have.
As you mentioned there can be complications with surgery. As for the blod clots I have read on here about several people taking blood thiners to help with that. And you will wear hose's after surgery. The doctors doing this at Columbia are very experienced in doing the WLS.
I'm only about half way thru what I need to do to get my surgery date so I don't know for sure about the 2 week diet. If I have to do one it won't be a biggie for me because I am on a liquid protein diet now so that I can loose weight before my surgery because my BMI was pretty high.
I found the seminar to be very helpful...DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS!!!!
And you can find alot of information on the OH site just ask and someone is bound to know. You can also find alot of information on line. I have even watched a few of the surgeries on line.
I wish you the best with your journey....Tammy H

Dr. Scott did my surgery on April 24th of 2006. If I had to do it all over again I would in a heart beat!!!!! I just saw Dr. Scott for my early 1 year appointment. And he was extremely pleased with my progress. I think the world of Dr. Scott and his team of doctors. In any of my appointments that I have had with him. I have never felt rushed or afraid that I couldnt ask him anything. He sat down with me and explanined things out to me and got my thoughts on the matter also. Due to the fact that my BMI was extremely high 85.5. Dr. Scott put me on a total liquid diet for 2 months. I lost approx 45lbs before surgery. And have since then lost 175lbs for a total of 220lbs. I feel GREAT!!!!! He is now talking about have my tummy tuck done that he will do himself.
Just know that your going to have to jump thro some hoops. But we all did at one point of our journey. Dr. Scott is one to cross every T and dot every I. He wants to make sure that your going to do well even after the surgery. I wanna wish you all the best in your journey thro this. And please know your not alone. If you ever have any question? Please feel free to post here or drop me an email. I will try my best to answer you as quickly as possible. And if I dont know the answer someone else who is further out then me can asnwer for you. Let us know how your seminar goes. You will be in my thoughts and prayers!!!!
Best Wishes
Mel
Cindy, just want to welcome you to the board. I cant tell you anything about the doctors you are asking about but as far as blood clots. they almost all use the air boots on your and give you blood thinner shots they also get you up to sit ad then to walk as soon as possible. when you arent in the air boots you should be doing your foot and ankle exercises.
If you have any questions if no one here know s the answers we will do our best to find the answer for you or to direct you to a site that can answer you. Welcome Jan
Hi Cindy,
I had a blood clot as well after a surgery I had in '99. I went to Missouri Bariatrics and had Dr. Fearing as my surgeon, but she teamed up with Dr. Scott. They do take extra precautions during surgery and after to assure that it wont happen again. You will have to get up and walk almost immediately after recovery time-but thats okay, it keeps the blood pumping. I had my surgery 11/29/06 and I will tell you that they took excellent care of me-and my life has changed drastically because of the surgery. I had to go on the liquid protein diet for several weeks, but all in all-it was worth it and I would do it all over tomorrow!! Good luck to you and I will be praying for you. Where is your seminar? Love, Janet

Hi Cindy!
My name is Richelle. Dr. de la Torre is my surgeon and Dr. Scott will assist him. A week from today I'll have my surgery. The pro-op diet is liquid protein and clear liquids for two weeks prior to surgery. This shrinks your liver and gets it out of the way better, in turn, making the surgery less risky. Eveyrone in this office is very nice, but you sometimes have to be persistent. Just keep asking questions of both the office and this board, and you'll find the answers you need!! Good luck!!

Hello Cindy! I'm new here also but have been made to feel like at home. I have Dr. Scott, I went to the seminar on Feb. 16th, 2007 in Columbia, MO. I have my first appointment with him on the 5th of April. The way it happened for me was at the seminar they give you tons of info and paperwork. Lots of paperwork, lol. They also give you a list of labs you need to have done. I had my pcp take care of this for me. I faxed everything, and mailed the originals. Waited a couple of weeks called them and they asked me what surgeon I wanted to use. Because of all the help I have found on the Main board and the Missouri board my choice was easy, (either one of the two doctors would be fine) Dr. Scott had the first available appointment, lol
If you need anything visit my profile. Good Luck!! Susan
wow, susan, you got your appt fast, I went to the seminar the week before yours and got all my papers in, and tests, etc and as of last week they said my stuff was at the scheduler desk and i should be hearing from her anytime now....well she will def. hear from me tomorrow......glad I was purusin the board tonight, and welcome cindy and good luck, get your paperwork and any tests done on your own and keep up on the gals in the MO bariatric offices.....kim
LOL Kim, Heck, I thought it seemed like the 2 longest weeks I have ever had while I made myself wait to call them back. I dont know if this helped but I typed all my paperwork. I know from experience (working with the goverment) I seemed to get things done faster if I type anything I ever fill out for anyone. I cant type as fast as I used to, it took me a whole weekend to type the paperwork, LOL!!
