Help Needed! Have Vitamin and protein shakes questions!
Hi, Everybody!
My surgery is TWO weeks from Monday and I need to go shopping for vitamins and protein shakes. I'd like to know what products you all would recommend. I just looked at the Bariatric Eating.com website. Was thinking about ordering the 3 month supply set. Was wondering if I can find comparable products cheaper somewhere else? Just read Charolette's post on the protein vials and am planning on ordering a few of those. Also, Melissa's note on that...really appreciate the info Melissa!
How many of you take the sublingual Vitamin B12 and how many of you take the shots? Which one do you think works better? I hate shots, however, if you only have to take it once a month or twice a month that would be okay.
All you Post Op's out there...please give me your input! I have to go shopping and/or ordering online asap!
Thanks so much!
Debbie
Debbie the protein supplement i use is the "ON" 100%whey it is black label and can be bought at GNC, Food 4 Less and online. I like the vanilla ice cream flavor as i can make it what ever flavor i want that way. When i got to where i could have fruits i now keep a supply of frozen fruit in the freezer to make smoothies with it. and the frozen fruit make it good and icy cold. I have to use soy milk but with the protein powder and 8 oz of milk you have 30 grams of protein. When i first started them it would take me close to 30 mins or so to drink them but with sips and sips i got it down.
Is an easy way to get in your protein or most of it for the day.
I give myself a B-12 shot once a month but i think that is up to the indivadual. The b-12 shots are very cheap. like 6 dollars for a 6 month supply in a vial.
I know you are getting excited. You are on the fastest ride of your life. Jan

Thanks for the info! I'll bet it's a lot cheaper at Food4Less. I think there is one about 20 miles from here. Will have to check it out. When were you allowed fruit? Adding berries sound great to me! Where do you give yourself the B-12 shot once a month? I think I could handle a once a month shot. I like the cost too!
I am getting very excited! I got tomorrow morning for my Assessment at the hospital. A dear friend of mine is going with me. Sedalia is about an hour and a half from my house. Not too far and at least the weather is suppose to be nice tomorrow.
Thanks again,
Debbie D.

Hello! I just had my lapband surgery on 2-13-07 and my mom found Centrium chewables. They are a multi-vit and they are orange flavor. They tasted good. I also have Oscal. For protein shake I am just useing something my mom had picked up in Sam's Club a while back and she had bought it for herself but never opened it, so I ended up with it. It is chocolate and not too bad but smells bad and not too appealing. I have had Spurtein (spelling may be off) and it was in all kinds of flavors. I only know to get it in specialty health food stores. They taste great.
Hope this helps.
Debbie, Hi, Dr H. has some of the best vitamins. They are chewable and have the calcium in them. You can get them at the office. Just call and ask Dena or e-mail her. I have bought some of the Unjury protien.I tried samples of the flavored and I bought some unflavored. It mixes well. But I am one of those people who don't like the after taste of any of them. I have experimented with different flavors and mixing techniques which does help.If you mix them too long them seem to get foamy and to me are hard to swallow. But everyone is different. I do like mine with ice in the blender but after surgery who knows!!?? You just have to try things because everyone says what you like before WLS usually changes after WLS. Take care. Julia

My precious wls "angel" thank you for the info! How much do the vitamins at Dr. H's office cost? I like the idea it also has the calcium in it. One less pill to take. Is it a month, two or three month supply? I'm going to Sedalia tomorrow for my assessment and can stop by there on my way home and purchase some. Where do you purchase the unjury? THe unjury is an unflavored protein shake right?
I can't wait to meet you in person on March 5th!

I started out on Flinstones Complete multi-vitamins that are chewable. At my 6-month check-up, they told me to switch over to an adult multi-vitamin which I will do once I'm out of the Flinstones. I do the B-12 under the tongue once per week. It disolves in about 5 minutes and isn't too bad to tolerate. Also, I take Caltrate four times per day. I cut them in half and chew them as they are chewable.
In regard to Protein Shakes, I wouldn't buy too much in advance. I like the Slilm Fast Low Carb Diet in the can. It come in vanilla and chocolate. I like the chocolate the best, but the vanilla isn't too bad and is easy to add flavoring to. I take the 11 ounce can and put it in the blender with a large tablespoon of peanut butter and a small banana. I puree that, then I add ice and blend it into a smoothie. It is about 26 ounces of liquid and 25 grams or protein. I usually do it at night and sip on it for about an hour. Gives you plenty of liquid and about 1/3 of the daily protein I need. You can get those at Wal-Mart in a four pack or at Sam's Club in a 15-pack. They are about $1.20 per can.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thank you for the information. I would really like to be able to purchase samples of the different protein shakes before I purchase a large amount of one brand or another. Not sure if there are any samples out there. I will ask Dr. H about the Slimfast. THat would make it pretty easy.
Thanks again!
