Show-Me Girl
Well, you wouldn't have thought it would have happened so soon after surgery, but it did. Here I am 11 days out and I had a horrible dumping experience.
You know I have written that it has been hard for me to tell when I'm full. Well, now I know the signs.
Last night, after walking on my treadmill, I fixed a protein shake. I started with Isopure Zero Carb and added a piece of frozen banana and a tablespoon of peanut butter. I mixed that all up (licked the peanut butter spoon) and set down to about 8oz of shake.
I drank about 3 oz and I had this feeling that it was enough and I should stop. But it tasted so good and I didn't want to waste it. So, I drank a few more ounces. I started to get this dull pain in my back. I thought that is weird I wonder if I should quit drinking. But no, I drank some more. I drank about 7 oz. Stopped and got up and walked to the kitchen.
Within about 10 minutes I could tell that I had made a big mistake. I was starting to feel very bad, sick to my stomach and achy. I went and set in my chair. At that point I knew the inevitable was coming.
I got some plastic sacks and went to the bathroom. Sitting there my body began to try to throw up, but it felt awful.
I could only spit and it hurt! I began to sweat all over my body. The nausea was intense but nothing I could do about it. It seemed like it lasted forever, but it was at least 5 minutes. Then it passed and I went back and set down. I fell asleep for a bit and then suddenly it started all over again. This time more sever. I actually did vomit and was drenched in sweat. After about 8 minutes of that it passed again.
I finally lay down in bed and slept fine. This morning I feel great, but believe me it was a lesson learned. I guess being a Show-Me girl I have to learn things the hard way. I've read hundred of stories about dumping on the web site, but still pushed the limits on myself.

Hi Marilyn;
Just a note....sounds like you both filled your pouch too much and dumped. The sugar in the peanut butter and banana was probably too much, so you dumped. But, the pain in your back was filling your pouch too full. Don't force anything. Throw it out! I can tell you from experience that realizing you are full is one of the hardest thing to figure out. Lesson learned so just continue on. You are doing great so just chalk this experience.
Hug;
Barbara
Marilyn, You have my sympathy girl!!! My daughter and I both have dumping sydrom and we haven't had surgery. It is horrible. One day it hit in Whichita,Ks at the court house. I ended up laying on the dirty bathroom floor because it was cooler. I couldn't stand if I had too. Someone found me and called 911. When the paramedics got there I was able to get up and sit for awhile.Then my daughter had one at Denny's not too long ago when her and her husband were coming home from Columbia. He called me scared too death!!! I told him he could take her to ER, call 911 or just sit with her. That is what they did. Usually if she has this it is at home. It really scared them. But we have a rare metabolic form of muscular dydtrophy that jacks with the blood sugar and how your body uses it.I have kissed the bathroom floor so many times, and have literally crawled to bed. No Fun!!!!!It is just better to stop eating sooner and not get too full. Remember we are going to be like babies learning to eat. We have to try one thing at a time and very small amounts. When you reach that first feeling have you tried just freezing the rest till you fell like you need something more? I know this is the part I dread. Surgery no problem, dumping OMG!!!!!!! Tkae care . julia
Oh, Marilyn,
I'm so sorry this happened to you. However, lesson learned and shared and I'm listening. I had a feeling about bananas so I tried 1/3 once in a shake and got by with it but felt like it was a close call. I haven't dumped but did have some problems with boiled shrimp, minced up with mayo. Pouchie didn't like it and I just felt ouchy. Laid down and it went away. Think I may have eaten it too fast. Will try again when I'm further out. I was pushing my luck.
You are doing great, and you've learned two important things. Overfilling and dumping. It is sure a learning process isn't it? I think you have to have an above-average IQ to have this surgery and survive the re-entry to eating process!!! It seems I think too much about what I'm going to eat, or not, next. I know it will become second nature but right now it's almost consuming. Glad DH is a sweetie about me being so self-absorbed. It is all about ME right now.
Love and hugs,
Lana
If you are only 11 days post op - you probably should stay away from the fruit also your pouch can only hold about 1/2 cup at a time so you were trying to drink too much at one time - take it slower and let it settle before you drink more - you have up to 30 minutes before you start to lose some of the protein in the shakes. I use the fruits a lot now & have no problem with dumping but if I drink too much at one time I still will dump - I'm 2 years post op. Just a suggestion.
