Has anyone had to have a vena cava filter put in before surgery? Dr. Gorospe is having me get one due to my 50+BMI and I am wondering how bad it hurts and what else I should know. I hope someone can help me with some info. Dannielle

Danielle, I have not had one, but I do know there will be some pressure and a little discomfort but they will give you something for it.This is a good preventative measure in case you are prone to clots. You should be fine. Will keep you in my prayers. Julia

Hi there, Vena Cava filters are to prevent pulmanary embolis and other very serios complications. This is an out patient procedure. Typically a sheath is introduced through your groin, it is positioned correctly and a filter is introduced into the sheath already in the groin....and it is done.... pretty quick and painless. You will not feel the filter at all. If the groin site is used then pressure is applied for a while, and your activity is limited for a few hours to prevent bleeding. I have assisted with several cases, everyone does fine and so will you. You must have a great Dr. I think this is a very good idea to prevent problems post op. When and where are you having this done? Don't stress over this at all, they will probably give you a little something to help relax you, we always did. Tara
