I am wanting to get my WLS done here in the near future. I have chosen my doctor the only thing I need to do is choose a health insurance company as I am opting out of my company insurance because of the exclusion policy. So my question is what company has everyone used that is the least resistant to the surgery , will get you approved quick and wont break your wallet ? I would really appretiate everyones help or input

Be very, very careful opting out of your company insurance. My husband lost his job over a year ago and we still haven't been able to get medical insurance. The reason they keep turning us down is because of weight! We haven't tried since I've lost 105 pounds, but before my surgery that was their out. I had to self-pay for my surgery, but we really need some kind of medical insurance now. There are not a lot of insurance companies that will pay for WLS. Most of the companies that pay, are group health through big companies that specifically have WLS put into their policies. I've spent many hours checking out different insurance companies and WLS is usually in their exclusions. Good luck to you. Linda

Just had to comment on this.........I am at my current place of employment cause it's the only way I could get insurance coverage AFTER WLS. That's right!! I was uninsurable AFTER wls unless I joined a GROUP plan. I could NOT get individual insuarance. Sad isn't it. They said I was high risk being a gastric-bypass patient. UNBELIEVABLE to me as I am now healthier than I've been in over 20 years!!!! No more diabetes, high BP, high Cholesterol, sleep apnea.......yet still I am a RISK?? It's insane. Sooooooo, we are doomed either way as far as insuarance goes but after WLS we can get good covereage through an employer with a GROUP plan. Good luck!!!!! Tami

Many insurance companies are listing their benefits and requirements for WLS, if they cover it, on the websites. So you might start finding which companies are even willing to cover it by doing your own net search. Good luck, tami

Well I know I can't self pay or be financed as my credit sucks. I am unsure as to which insurance to pick I havent had health insurance since I was a kid. When I was in the army I never had to worry and when I got out I didn't worry because I was never sick and aside from a cold I havent been sick in years. But with a blood pressure of 146/86 and a weight of 377 I feel I am pushing my luck. I have 4 boys and I just wanna be able to participate in thier lives. I dont wanna observe life anymore I wanna live it

Derek, I agree, be careful opting out of your company plan. Better to stay in and fight for an exception. I, like Tammi, work where I do mostly because it is a large employer who has to cover all employees equally. I had very specific criteria that I had to meet before I could have WLS but I did it and they approved me. I don't think any private pay insurance that you could afford would pay for WLS. Be careful.\ Hugs. Lana
