My story? Wow, well let me start with this. I wouldn't be here today if I wasn't covered under the Grace of God! He has walked me through every step, every heartache, every victory! I weighed in at 391 lbs. Dr. Hornbostel told my parents that a normal surgery was 2-4 hours and that because I was extremely overweight that my surgery could take longer than normal. He said that he would try to do it laporscopic (spelling?) but if he couldn't do it then he would have to cut me open. After two hours in the operating room I was wheeled into the recovery room. See, God's grace is sufficient for each of us. That night I got out of bed and the next day I began walking and haven't stopped. My only set back was that I didn't drink my fluids and I got dehydrated. Don't do this! It isn't fun. If you want to know why some complications occur it is because we don't follow the rules. Don't be afraid to ask Dr. H any questions at all. Even if they seem unsignificant they could be crutial. There are some things that have happened since, I've learned the hard way what I can and can't eat. Everyone is different. It is extremely important to join a support group and stick to it. Even when things are going great (which is more times than not) you can be a support to someone who is struggling and is where you used to be. I'm starting a support group at the beginning of 2007 and am so excited to see the different stages everyone is at. Don't cause yourself undo stress. You probably, like most of us have, exhausted your efforts and have resorted to this drastic measure. Yes, it appears some people have complications not brought on by themselves, that's just a risk. In life we take risks everyday. We can't focus on the woulda, coulda, shoulda's because they will get us nowhere! We have to focus on what matters and be proud that you have the opportunity to take this step. I put on a size 16 jeans the other day. I haven't been this small since before I was in high school and I graduated in 1988. This is a miracle and I'm a witness to the changes that it makes in many peoples lives. Instead of focusing on the negative, think and focus on how blessed you are to be a part of this. Sorry to have talked your ear off. This is becoming a passion for me! Be blessed in your journey!

Wow congrats on the size 16 jeans. I would love to be in size 16. So how much weight have you lost all together? Did you have any complications? I am just so scared I will have some sort of complication. I am young though and I guess that helps. So how far did you have to come to get to Sedalia? Gretta

Gretta, I know exactly how you feel, my surgery is on Friday. I start on my liquid diet tomorrow and we leave Friday morning at 1 a.m. I know a few people that have had surgery by Dr. H. and he is a wonderful man. All of my questions have been answered. My friend Kelly started out at 280+ pounds and she is down to 139. Amazing. I can't wait to see my results. I now weigh 271 and I am hoping to get to 140. Keep your head up, this is a very exciting thing!!! I have been fighting to get my surgery for this last year and now that I am so close, I have nothing but butterflies in my stomach. Everything will be just fine, and you have come to the perfect place for support. These wonderful people have welcomed me and made me feel right at home.
