17 days Post-Op and Needing Help
Hello Everyone!
I survived my surery on Friday the 13th (thanks to all of your prayers, I'm sure) but I have had some really bad episodes since.
First, since I have cardiomyopathy and the decision was made to hold my heart meds and diuretics until my dismissal 2 days after surgery, I went into fluid overload from the IV's. The first night home, I walked the floor crying and unable to breathe. I spent the next day at KU Med Center's ER for 7 hrs and 43 minutes (believe me, I was ready to charge them "overtime").
But they were checking for everything even pulmonary embolism.
But afterI got an IV shot of lasix, I started to let go of some of the fluid that had built up and I've now got that problem under control. Unfortunately, my diabetes still wants to keep me in its grip.
: While I have reduced the amount of insulin I originally took quite drastically, I still have been having some sugar "crashes" (down to 42 on Saturday night)
Of course, when that happens, you need to get some sugar in to bring yourself back up. That caused a major dumping episode complete with chills, the "runs"..everything. Yesterday was a complete wash, I had no evergy for anything. Now I'm having a hard time trying to get in the amount of protien I'm supposed to have. The shakes like Glucerna and Boost are ok, but that's only 6 grams per can. I can's see drinking 10 cans of that stuff a day. It's not that it tastes bad, it just seems that I would be doing nothing else except drinking shakes all day long. And this rule about only 2 tablespoons every 30 minutes makes it even harder. I've read about this Designer's Whey protein, but I'm concerned about the taste. It's bad enough that the pills I still have to take for my heart and water retention have to be crushed and taste absolutely disgusting
, if the whey protien was also bad tasting, I don't think I could stomach it (bad pun).
On the plus side, I have lost 20 lbs since surgery and I'm very happy there. I want so much for this to succeed, but I think I need some guidance from my Mizzo pals
. Can I hear from you soon?
Theresa
P. S. One thing I did find that is GREAT! I absolutely hate the children's flintstone vitamins, but Centrum Silver comes in a chewable tab that is berry flavored and has the "adult" vitamins I really feel I need. I also found a "DARK Chocolate"
calcium chewable called "Adora". It's like having a piece of dark chocolate candy. Like a little piece of luxury. I found both of these at the Walgreen's store in Raytown, MO.

Teresa the 100% Whey protein powder i use is absolutly the best tasting there is i think. it is called ON . It can be found in food for less,. some gnc stores have it. also some wal greens and some super wal marts. where exactly do you live. if you will email me at [email protected] i will send you a picture so you will know exactly what to look for.
I know right now you are having buying remorse. but the more weight you lose the better your blood sugars will get. If you can start walking even if it is only for 5 minutes at a time. dont give up . there is better days ahead. I use the centrum chewable tabs too . I do two of them a day one in the morning and one at supper.
i use viactiv calcium chews they come in choc, raspberry and stawberry flavors. all good
Love and care about you and praying for things to get straighten out. Jan
Vesta,
When is your surgery date? I want to put you on my prayer list. Even though I've had some really bad problems, I'm not sorry about the surgery. In fact, I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. I know I could not have lost 16 lbs. in 10 days on my own (that's the official count from my first post-op visit but I'm down 20 lbs. on my scale now) and know that I will continue to lose. If I can do anything for you, please email me at [email protected]. I'm trying to get my profile up and running and even though it's ONLY 20 lbs.; you CAN see a change. Thank you for your prayers and good luck when your day comes.
Theresa
Jan,
Thank you so much for the info. I just got back from a doctor's appt. (for my feet-diabetes) so that's why I didn't respond earlier. I will look for that protein powder at my local stores. I live in Kansas City, MO...closer to Raytown and Independence but I also have family (my daughter) across the state line in the Overland Park, Ks area. You can email me at [email protected]. I plan to try and get my profile up in the next few days but the lack of energy has been a real killer. I'm not sorry about the surgery, even with all the problems. I know it will get better and I have great faith in Dr, Hornbostel. Patience....well that's a bit of a different story
...just ask my husband....I usually want everything done yesterday.
Thanks again for your prayers, I know they have seen me through what I hope is the worst of the situation. I believe thiings can only get better from now on.
Theresa
