Hi, I am having my surgery on the 20th, open RNY, and surgeon is taking the 150 bypass. Is that Proximal or Distal? I think Distal but wanted to be sure. Also, I read a post from a woman who had open RNY and was complaining of gas. Hmmm I thought the gas thing was a complaint mainly from laproscopic surgeries because of the gas they blow you up with to see? Did any of you who had open RNY have a lot of gas post op???? Thanks for your support !

Gas is a common post op problems no matter if you have open or rny. Your intestines are changed forever which is good. I am not sure on proximal or distal. The larger your bmi the more intestines they usually bypass.

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense that I would have gas after they cut the bowel. Somehow I thought that was because of the gas they pumped in for laproscopic. Cute little dogs. I am a huge dog lover.

Deanna, Seems to me everyone complains of gas. I also know Gas-X now comes in strips you put in your mouth like those Listerine strips and that should be great for post-op. Lana

Thanks. I did see the Gas-X strips but thought I wouldn't need them. I guess I was wrong !! Will pick some up on the way home. Thanks for the prompt response.

I honestly think you end up with gas anytime they open you up.Stands to reason that air gets in there . I had horrible gas after my 3 c-sections but not intestinal it was in my shoulder and chest(no I'm not crazy). My doc said it was common and walking helped work it out. Dannielle
