Maybe I should elaborate on what I could use...I would like to know if anyone is having particular luck with finding things to help them get healthy before surgery. I am starting to study more about health and nutrition. Love ya sis!

Hi, Sugar, Welcome to the Missouri board. I haven't had surgery yet; I'm scheduled for August 10. I will tell you a little bit about what I did to get this far. I spent about 2-3 years haphazardly checking out WLS. I wasn't really that serious about it at first--seemed too drastic to me! However, I had an epiphany in December, 2005. My 80 year old father sat me down and told me he would live longer than me if I didn't do something. Boy, I got serious about WLS. I read everything I could get my hands on about the surgery as well as nutrition. I went with my husband to Dr. Hornbostel's seminar on WLS and asked questions. I don't have insurance that will pay for the surgery so I am self-pay. That means I didn't have all the hoops to jump through to do this. No psych eval, no sleep study, no psychiatrist, no tests at all! When I made up my mind to have WLS, I joined Curves for exercise, I started cutting back on my food intake, I began taking vitamins and calcium, I started drinking the protein drinks, and just became a health nut. I decided that if I was going to spend $23,000 out of pocket that I'd really better be serious about this. I talked on this board to lots of nice people and got lots of great advice and learned lots of things. I purchased 3 books that were written by women who have gone through WLS and are anywhere from 2 - 5 years out. That was a big help. I have a friend in this area that has had the surgery and is 2 years out and she told me I'd better be prepared to change all my eating habits that I've developed in my 57 years. If I couldn't envision myself doing this, then WLS wasn't for me. This is a total change of everything that you've been doing. I made a vow to myself as well as my husband and son that I was really ready to do something drastic about my weight gain. So, I'm dieting, exercising, and becoming a new me. I really don't even mind starting my 1000 calorie diet today. I'm ready to be a LOSER! The one thing I have discovered is that the protein drinks help to curb your appetite. When I start the day off with an ON 100% Whey Gold Standard drink, I'm not craving anything all day. I really don't even care if I eat or not! I think that's awesome. I hope this has helped you a little bit. The only thing that I believe you need to do it decide if you are committed enough for this kind of life change. If you are and are willing to do whatever the doctor says to do, then by all means have WLS. Good luck, Linda
