Vitamins, what do you recommend?
How do I go about picking vitamins to take? There are so many advertisements. Should I go with liquid, chewable, etc.? My surgery is coming up Aug. 24th and I would like to find a good source for vitamins and protein. My pre-assessment visit is Aug. 17th. I don't want to spend alot of money on something and then not be able to choke it down. Chewable I could probably handle but anything with a strong taste makes me gag. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have been checking around for the ON Whey Protein in different flavors but have only found French Vanilla at GNC so far.
I found the On Protein dring on line and is about the same as you pay for it in stores. with lots of flavors. www.bodybuilding.com is the site and the item number is OPT191. on the vits and calicum the book that Dr. Hornbostel gave you at your vist with him state that you will take liquid one for awhile and he will give you scripts for them when you leave the hospital. also for pain meds when you leave. It says in the book chewable childrens with iron .for the vits. Jan
I use vitamist. It is a spray . I sometimes use generic flintsones as they are cheap but I get tired of the taste. The vitamist tastes like a breath spray. I got samples from my wls surgeon so he approves them. Dont take pills as we wont absorb them well at all. I take a vitamin b12 shot once a month to avoid that pill as I think I absorb it better.
Thanks, David. Hope that you are feeling better. My dad has a pacemaker too and it took almost a year and a half for the doc to get it regulated correctly. He's doing o.k. now and I'm sure that you will feel alot better after you see your doctor. Trust yourself, you know how you feel. Keep going back to the doctor until it feels right.
Dr. Hornbostel was at our support meeting on July 11 and we talked to him about vitamins. He suggested the Optisource, which you can get from Dena at the same price that you can get them anywhere else. They are not only your multi-vitamins plus iron, but they also contain the calcium with vitamin D that the book recommends. And best of all, they come in one chewable wafer that they said tastes like the sweet tarts candy. Dr. H said they were specially designed for the bariatric patient. I believe the cost is around $25 per bottle, but you don't have to buy two different bottles like you would with calcium and multi-vitamins. I get my ON 100% Whey Gold Standard protein online at www.supplementwarehouse.com and it runs $15.09 for a 2 pound jug. You can also get the different flavors, which there are a lot of, in 5 pound containers. I also buy the Profect Protica, which is advertised here on OH and they are not in as large amount to drink at one setting. The tubes come in flavors and they are the consistency of jello before it sets up. The tubes are 2.7 or 2.9 ounces per each and contain 25 grams of protein and 0 carbs and 0 fat. I think they are going to be wonderful for the small pouch we have. They are advertised to the left under the ad for the Lap-Band surgery here on OH. Good luck...

After the first month, you SHOULD be allowed to take regular-sized vitamins. I use Centrum Performance because it has more than 100% of most vitamins (except the ones that are dangerous!). I figure more couldn't be all that bad, considering that we malabsorb some of it. As for the first month...good luck on that one!
Protein-wise, I like EAS Advant Edge. 15 g of protein for 100 calories and also some vitamins. Out of the dozens that I've tried (including powder and pre-mixed), this was by far the best (ON Whey made me want to throw up). You can find it at Walmart and Sam's Club (Sam's has the better price on it). I like the chocolate flavored ones...the berry and orange ones are disgusting!
