I need surgery on my lower back for the third time but my Dr. says I need to lost weight first. He recommends the Lap Band. I have gone to a seminar with Dr. Malley in KCMO and he is all for the LBS but I have noticed in my research of WLS that most people are choosing or have chosen RNY, can anyone tell me why? I would think they would choose the Lab Band over all the others due to it being easier on the body. I am getting ready to go to another seminar in Sedalia, MO. and I think this Dr. is more for the RNY. Can someone help me with this and tell what they think about the different procedures. So far I'm gonna stick with LBS unless I someone changes my mind. Any and all advice will be taken into consideration. Thank you in advance! :gossip:

That decision is one you'll have to make for yourself. I have not had surgery yet but when I do I hope to have RNY. I just can't stand the thought of something plastic in my body forever. That's just my personal phobia. Also, many insurance companies only pay for RNY, considering the band too experimental. Mine only pays for RNY. Hope that gives you some help. Many folks on this board love Dr. Hornbostel in Sedalia. Maybe you will too. Lana

Im one of Dr. Hornbostels future patients. I have surgery schedualed for August 14th . I have always wanted the RNY because the lap band isnt paid by my insurance for one thing but i never even considered it really. I am 65 and know this is my one chance and the lap band has to have attention and has even been known to have to go back and do it again. and the time with the fills. I just want it done and over with. and like Lana said im not too partial to having something plastic in my innerds. lol But the choice is totally yours and yours alone. which ever one you think will help and do you more good. that lap band has some good things aobut it as there is no re arranging of your intestions so you arent likely to have malabsorbtion problems. Less restriction on foods that are eaten and such. So there are good for both side. Jan

Hi Debbie, I am scheduled to have RNY on August 17th, Dr. Hornbostal is my doctor. When I went to the information seminar Dr. H. said he only does the banding on a woman that is planning on having children later down the road, he can pull the liquid out so that her baby can be healthy. After she delivers he can inflate the balloon back up and she can start her weight loss again. If I remember right he said that men seem to do ok on the banding but women usually don't, meaning they don't lose the weight like you would with RNY. I am having the RNY because I know me, to me with the lap band you always have the thought that if this doesn't work or I decide I don't want it anymore it can be undone. I myself need to know that this is permanet and that this will be my way of life from now on. I know if you meet Dr. Hornbostal you will like him. I hope this is helpful.

Hi Debbie, I am scheduled for open RNY on August 10. I chose RNY because I read about Lap Band and RNY on the internet and the info said that you lose more weight with the RNY than the Lap Band. Also, the Band can slip sometimes and then you have to have more surgery to put it back in place or have it revised into RNY. I figured I wanted the most weight loss I could get and I sure didn't want more surgery later so the RNY was for me. I am having it open because I've had 5 previous stomach surgeries and have adhesions. While Dr. Hornbostel is in there fixing everything, he is also going to remove my gallbladder so I won't have that possibility to worry about in the future. You are the one that has to live with your decision so nobody else can or should make it for you. What we feel is right for us may not be what is right for you. I think you should get on the internet and check out both surgeries and compare the good and bad of both and make your choice--an informed one--that way. That's pretty much what everyone of us on the board has done. We'll all be here to help you and support you in any way we can no matter which one you choose! Good luck in your search and may God bless you. Linda

Hi Debbie, Which WLS to have is a very personal decision. The best thing to do is read up on all of them as well as the surgeon you are choosing before you decide, determine which one will work for you from what you have learned and then go from there. Here is a link to a comparison chart: http://www.lapsf.com/weight-loss-surgeries.html . It compares 4 different types of WLS....2 malabsortive types and 2 restrictive types. (copy and paste the entire link into your browser) I went to dr. J Lopez's seminar last yr., he and dr. Malley used to partner I believe. I also went to dr. Hornbostel's seminar and actually went on to meet with dr. H. I really enjoyed dr. H's seminar (although I was late and missed the first half). I think after attending Dr. H's seminar you will have a better understanding of both procedures as dr. H performs both types of surgery. I found that at dr. L's seminar was quite a bit biased. I attribute that to the fact that he mainly does LB versus RNY. Also, I was very turned off by the fact that dr. Lopez did show up to do the seminar. He had a nurse/lap band patient and a guy who works with the practice also, who happened to be the nurse/lap band patient's husband. Whatever you decide, I wish you nothing but the best. Have a good day! ~~~Triple C.~~~

Thank you all for getting back to me so soon! All the information was helpful and it sounds like I have a big descision to make or insurance :zap: and Dr. Hornbostel will be making it for me...not to happy bout that one. I'm 48, have had 8 surgeries: appendectomy at 10, cyst on tailbone at 18, gallbladder removed at 22, tubes tied at 27, lap exploritory at 30 (looking for endometriosis), back surgery in 2003 and 2006 with a total hysterectomy (found the endo.) 9 years ago, so no more babies for me, unless their "grandbabies" I have at least 4 more surgeries I have to have done ( 2 low back and a cyst on my tailone has to be removed, again and the gbs too! ) and feel like enough stuff has been taken out...ready for something to be put back and I know what stomach surgery is like, Lap Band sounds alot easier, for me anyway. :-s I will be going to his seminar and see what Doc has to say. I'm doing this July 4th. Will follow up with you guys after that. Good Luck and God Bless you all with your decisions and surgeries...Deb
