I just had the gastric bypass on June 12th and physically I am doing ok. But, I am afraid to eat. I started at just under 350, I have already lost 35lbs. I am honestly scared to eat anything or drink anything heavy because I don't walt to hurt myself or stop losing. The problem is that I am getting really tired and am losing concentration way to quick. I just need some help and advise from someone that has done this. I get to start more regular food, but I don't think I am going to be able to eat much of it either. Please help.

has your doctor told you to go ahead and eat certain things now? what ever he says will not hurt your stomach. the thing about not eating is that it will send your body into starvation mode and you wont lose that much anyway. So you need to eat what and how much your doctor says. follow it to the letter. Jan

Well I'm still pre-op but I have thought about what your saying and Wondered if I would be afraid to eat for fear of messing something up. I do pray that you will be able to eat, As Jan said follow what your doctor tells you to a T. We don't want to mess things up after everything that we have gone through up to this point in our lives. Trust your doctor, trust and believe in Jesus if you do that I believe you can overcome your fears. Take Care Brenda

Please accept my response as being totally sincere even though I sometimes come off a touch hardnosed. You just had major surgery. You HAVE to eat in order to heal properly and take care of your nutritional needs. You HAVE to stay hydrated unless you want to open up a whole 'nother can of worms/problems The weight loss will work itself out without you fretting over it. You HAVE to get your fluids in (no excuses) and you HAVE to get your protein in (AGAIN no excuses). There are too many products out there on the market that will fit your needs even with you being so newly postop. You don't have to worry about hurting your new tummy either. My great concern is that you are starting to describe symptoms of dehyrdration and lack of protein. BOTH of those issues can get out of hand quite easily and you will find yourself right back in the hospital in a bad way. Please drank and please eat. Supplement with protein drinks right now. Even if you have taste/texture issues (like I do) there are still a bunch of products out there that will work.... We are here to help and to support you! Please let us know how you are doing! Elizabeth i dont think that is hardnose at all. The lack of water and protein can be a serious problem and one a lot of people dont realize how serious. It can kill you flat out. The lack of either can and will if it gets serious enough ,stop your heart dead in its tracks. So Belinda drink, take your protein suplements. there is one that i buy from Food 4 less called ON 100% whey protein. it disolves completly in 1% milk and you can get it in some great flavors. my favorite so far is Rocky Road. no grit , not aftertaste, and if you mix it with the 8 oz of 1%milk you get 32 grams of protein . promise you will start drinking and eating. you have too to lose the weight right. The surgery isnt a lic. to anoxriea. Jan

Your body needs protien to heal and get better and keep losing. GET YOUR PROTIEN AND WATER IN . You can do protien shakes if you dont want to make them buy them already made in containers. It may take a while to get a shake down but that is ok take your time but you need at least 60-80 grams of protien a day to stay healthy and lose weight. If plain water bothers use try the flavored water of crystal lite.

I was both scared and chomping at the bit by the time I was ready to eat soft foods. I assume that is where you are about now? The previous posters are so right on. Your doctor and nutritionist will help you every step of the way. If you have not called them to express this concern, please do so. That's what they are there for. In regard to protein, I couldn't stand anything choc or vanilla or any protein powder. I could not stand the smell or the way it mixed in water. Then I found GNC liquid protein. It comes in punch flavor. 3 T has 18 grams of protein. I mix it in Crystal Light pink lemonade and it doesn't taste all that much diffo from what Crystal Light tastes. Also, I use ALOT of crystal light. I've gotten to where now I like regular water but for a long time, I couldn't take just straigh****er and so CL was my lifesaver. When we first have surgery, we do have to go slow on the solid food just because our pouches are healing and are not ready for that yet. So, just follow your doc's orders and you'll be fine. Unless you start drinking regular milkshakes 6 times a day, I know you will lose weight. Our tummies will not let us overeat at the point you are at. You will continue to lose. I started out at 391. I've lost 162 lbs. I'm still losing although slowly like about 1-2 lbs a month. I'm 19 months out. Our bodies will do the work. We just have to realize there are basic building blocks we can not do withou****er and protein are two of those plus our multivitamin, B-12 and calcium. These are the things we must get in every day. The more protein at this point, the better. The more water, the better. At a minimum 64 oz of water, but when I drink more in a day, I lose better, even at this point. I do snacks of protein like a piece of ham and a slice of cheese or a carton of low fat yogurt or some nuts are normal snacks for me. We do have to temper our protein with other things or constipation will be our foe. I also take a docusate each day to keep the constipation down. Right now, I'm taking an iron pill as well because I was low on iron. It's so important to let the doc do the blood work you need so someone keeps an eye on what your body is up to. Don't worry. You've been given a gift. I understand you'd like to be sure the weight will continue to come off and it will. Also remember that this is the time you need to start relearning how to eat correctly. So, again, follow your doctor and nutritionist's directions. Call the nutritionist as often as you need to in order to retrain your eating habits. We have had a long time to train ourselves the bad way to eat. Some people don't take advantage of this time and treat the surgery like another diet and can't wait to find something they can cheat and get away with eating. Watch yourself. Do what the doc says and you'll do great! Email me if you have any questions. I've been where you are. You can do this. Teresa
