I have medical assistance through the state of minnesota and I just called them today and they said they do cover WLS you just have to meet their requirements. Not sure if this helps you at all.

Hello!

I am new to OH, and to the bariatric surgery process. I briefly looked into having the surgery with my current insurance. However i was informed that they have an exclusion and that no one had had luck getting an appeal through. So I put the idea on the back burner, as leaving my job was not an option. Sadly for me I will no longer have coverage through my job after the first of the year. So now I am looking to get insurance through the MNsure website. As I'm looking it appears that every plan has exclusions for weight loss surgery.

What I was to know is if anyone has gotten insurance though MNsure and if they had any luck getting bariatric surgery covered. I'm hoping that losing my insurance can be turned into a positive, rather than the hassle it has been so far.

If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it!

Both my insurance and my husband's insurance had exclusions for WLS.  I searched to find an independent policy to cover the WLS and found that there really isn't any private plans that cover it.  That was two years ago.  My best advice for you is to sit down with an insurance guy-- he'll know what's out there and what your choices are.  I ended up self-pay.  It was expensive-- but also the best decision I ever made.

Good luck to you!  I hope you find something that will cover it...

I feel like I am losing my mind trying to find an insurance plan to switch through for WLS in Minnesota. I was on Tricare Prime because my husband was an active duty marine. He was medically separated, and now we have lost our coverage through Tricare. Please help I have been looking up plan after plan and have no been able to find one that covers bariatric surgery. I am already in the process of WLS my surgeon has already taken me on and I have qualified, I am hoping I didn't do all of this work for no reason.ReplyQuoteMember Serviceson 10/30/14 8:44 am - Irvine, CA

I had the sleeve almost two years ago and it was the best thing I ever did.  Happily maintaining a 152lb loss.  It's not easy, but I promise it's worth it.

Hello,

I am new to this forum, but I have had a consult for a gastric surgery. I am leaning towards the sleeve. I was looking and gathering information to the bypass and sleeve. I am lucky that my insurance will pay for it and that there is clause to my insurance as my BMI is not over 40 and I do not have any co-morbidity. My BMI is 38.7 and in my insurance it stated that if have had a BMI of over 35 for 3+ years with no success of weight loss it can be covered with insurance. I struggle to with my weight since I have had my thyroid removed. I have seen a lot of great results from the gastric sleeve. I would like to hear what peoples thoughts are, pictures if have them and the difficult moments too as I think that will help me prepare for the worst...

I am hoping to find a great deal of support on this site and I hope I am able to give it back.

Have a delightful day
