Topic: RE: ETOH PRE AND POST OP
First off - keep on working on your sobriety!

Secondly - my clinic was very good about covering the Transfer Addictions.  We talked in depth about them and how they can affect me post op.  While I went into this, knowing full well that it could happen, I have also fallen victim to a transfer.  I had quit smoking for 5 years - and about 6 months post op - I started again and have not been able to stop.  For me, it is easier to smoke then have the possibility of eating!  I am terrified of gaining weight back, while I know that it does happen, I just don't want to.  I am actively working towards giving this nasty habit up again, but it is so much harder for me now.  I have never been much of a drinker and while I have drank since surgery, I still don't like the way it makes me feel - so I have a drink on occassion and that is it.

I think it falls into our own hands to fully understand the ramifications of how things affect us after surgery.  Addictive personalities going in, not cured, just find something different.  I have taken up gardening, and am finally getting into the working out - hoping to transfer my energy to doing things that are good for me!!!

Thanks
Kelly

Topic: ETOH PRE AND POST OP
I am new to this site! I had an open RNY Dec. 2005 and the following June 2011 voluntarily put myself into inpatient treatment at Hazelton for alcohol. I rarely drank prior to surgery as I considered it emptied calories and if I would have consumed those I would have with food!

Needless to say, I switched addictions and have been in a total of three inpatient treatments for alcohol total! I am seeing a therapist weekly, a psychiatrist for my now "depression" and attending AA three to four times a week.

My purpose of this post is not for sympathy! I would rather know what education was provided pre-op and than post-op? I believe that this is more common than is talked about. Rather than successes.

Yes per say, I was successful at WLS. I was 284 day of, 140 lowest, currently 165. Yet, I still struggle. As they say "one day at a time" and that is all that I can do! I don't have much sobriety time yet, but I attend three to four AA meetings a week and I have a sponsor!

I just would like to see more education given out/provided pre and post regarding cross addictions. Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated for everyone on this sensitive topic. Sincerely, Butterfly

Topic: RE: Approval
Hi Jessica:

I see you had the RNY done with BCBS...do you know anyone that has had the sleeve done and approved with BCBS? I'm searching everywhere before I have the dr. submit my paperwork. I think I might have a better chance at approval since I have a lap band now and that needs to be removed. If you have any information, please let me know. I live in Florida, but the company I work for has our policy out of Minnesota, since the headquarters are in Center City, MN. Kinda a wierd situation, but anyway. Drop me a line when you can. How are you doing with the surgery you had? I don't want that surgery, but at this point and time, I will be glad to have anything. Thanks so much...Janine

Topic: RE: Approval

Hi:

I'm new to this site, but not too new to WLS. I had the band put in in 2004, I now need the revision for many reasons, one being the band just did not work for me and now it's really bothering me and my GERD is awful also with a number of other issues. I was just wondering if someone could possibily give me some clue as in and if BCBS of Minnesota will approve the sleeve??? My policy reads "investigational", but I've read some people have gotten them to appprove it. I don't know if I should send the paper work in for a sleeve or a bypass (which is really my second to last resort) I really don't want that, but at this point in my life I will be happy with anything. I'm so dissappointed with the band and now it's not even working due to scare tissue and errosion around the stomach. I need it out so bad, but want the sleeve at the same time. If anyone can give me a aray of hope, I would greatly appreciate it. If you or anyone you know has had this approved with bcbs, please let me know. Thanks so much! Janine

Topic: RE: I'm going to Maple Grove coffee on Saturday
I just might have to get myself up early and head up that way. I don't make it to any of them that often, but I do like to hit the Maple Grove one now and then. I don't wanna see it die out, either!

Come on, peeps - let's get this group going strong again! I know summer's a busy time for everyone, but ya gotta have your coffee to start the day, anyway!

I will pray for him as I do for my niece's husband who was deployed today as well.  Also a friend of mine's fiance went today as well.   They both were heading to Kuwait first as well.  My niece and her husband have 3 small children.  I will pray for the families here behind as much as the soldiers.  They all have a rough road ahead.
