Need some advice from my neighbors in the south
Suggestion for the best Protein and Mineral Supplements after RNY
I have had some advice but I am not familiar with the tastes and textures of any! I am a true protein shake greenhorn! Anyways I live around 3 hours from Duluth in Thunder Bay, about 30 mins from the USA border, so I like having my options open about buying the best protein mix possible...no one would know better than you guys!
I am prepping for post surgery after Feb 10, and wanted to know the best suggestions for Protein and Mineral supplements. I am in favour of the ones with higher protein because I really am not down with shakes that have 10g of prot and having to get down 4-6 shakes a day since I am recommended to have an intake between 40-60 with less than 20g of carbs and less than 5g of fat.
I work security for a health centre and the ladies here are trying to get me to buy Visalus Sciences Vi-Shape Shake Mix. I'm kind of leery of a protein mix who's slogan is "The Shake Mix that tastes like Cake Mix" LOL
I have also looked into Click Expresso Protein Shakes.
What is your suggestion?
Regards,
Darren
PS Love your forums! Very informative!

Personally i wouldn't stock up on anything your tastes will vary after surgery. Everyone's tastes are different my favorite is pure protien vanilla availible at Walmart. Pure protien also has bars with really good protien/cal numbers when you get to that stage. I just had my one year anv yesterday and my appointment last 3 minutes.
I agree with Dave. Right now im suffering through the Peanut Butter, flavor by Body Fortress. Next time ill try a small tub, first.

It really does come down to a taste thing Darren (and fellow Canadian!! - I am originally from Brandon, MB, but lived in Mississauga for my last year in Canada before moving to the us in 1998. I visited Thunder Bay several times as a kid on the way to Pakwash Lake (sp?)). I started drinking Unjury chocolate shakes prior to surgery and loved them. I was drinking a 2-3 per day, and had no issues what so ever. I tried the GNC brand, the Walmart Brand, and a few others, but the Unjury was my favorite with the least aftertaste.
After surgery I couldn't drink the shakes anymore. The texture of the frothy milkshake literally brought me close to vomiting no matter what kind I tried. I had so many people from support group offer me sample, and I just couldn't do it.
Admittedly I am at a disadvantage - I am lactose intolerant - so I was unable to drink the Click shakes, but I think it really wouldn't have mattered anyways. I had to resort to protein bars such as Luna to get my protein in which is unfortunate because the calories can add up quickly.
I recently discovered Protein Twist from Protica. They are protein jelly candy, and they are delicious! Each 1 oz candy has 15g of protein, a full serving of fruit, only 3 g of sugar, and only 100 calories. I was having to eat 2 protein bars to get that level of protein, at a much higher calorie count.
My best suggestion for you is to go to the websites for the protein suppliers and see if they have samples you can purchase. I know that Unjury has samples, as does Jay Robb (I believe it's called). As for the ViSalis shakes, my sister-in-law sells the stuff and I wouldn't touch it even if I could stomach it!!
Good luck on your surgery, and let us know how it went!

People are right...after surgery your tastes will change for more than just the protein drinks. I have found that I love the chicken broth and taste-free powder from Unjury. They let you buy it by the single packet, so you can try it before you commit to the expensive bottles. I also like the Isopure Alpine Punch flavor from GNC or online. Before surgery I liked the vanilla and chocolate protein drinks, but since the surgery I have not been able to find one I can drink!
Buy what you need for your presurgery liquid diet, then pick up a few sample packets from online or at a natural food store. I would recommend you get some that can be mixed with water, not milk, for post surgery. I am now lactose intolerant, which I wasn't before WLS. I drank some of the SF Carnation Instant Breakfast, but had to mix with water. I barely tolerated that for the first couple weeks out, but haven't been able to stomach it since!
Good luck! Be sure to SIP, SIP, SIP and WALK, WALK, WALk after surgery, it helps trust me!

I really like syntrax nectar- especially the nectar sweets and latte. You can get a sample pack of around a dozen flavors. I've also used Body Fortress and Market Pantry (from Target) when I just can't shell out $35/tub, but they are not 100% whey isolate. Immediately preop I did Isopure before I could do full liquids/milk- gross, IMO, but choked some down. :) Good luck!
I am a big fan of Premier Nutrition Protein shakes. You can get them at Costco (and possibly elsewhere). Prior to surgery, i preferred the Vanilla over the Chocolate. After the surgery, the Vanilla is too sweet for me, but I love the Chocolate. 30g of protein in 11 oz!
Good luck with your surgery!

My favorite is Melaleuca's ProFlex 20. It has 20g of protein if used with 8 oz water and 28g if used with8 oz non-fat milk. I cannot even swallow most of the others. The other one that isn't to bad is Shakeology but it cost more. But it has 17g of protein and also other nutrients in it. I really like the chocolate but the green berry I can't stand. I think if you go on their website you can order a trial sample. Good luck.
