Monday morning weigh-in--Stay on track this holiday!
It's the holiday season--parties, eggnog, buffets, etc. I am working hard to maintain and not gain the proverbial 5-10 lbs that most Americans gain during the holiday season. What are your best techniques for staying on track during the holidays? Let's share ideas!
I try to make sure I eat something high protein before a party, if it's a buffet-table sort of shindig. Then I troll the buffet, prioritize the things I really want to have, and space those out over the course of the night. And then I walk away and spend the time doing what parties are about--socializing. At least that's what I try to do. Some parties work better than others. I have a harder time if I drink more alcohol--then I throw caution to the winds and just munch. It's a bad thing.
This week's weigh-in report:
Starting weight: 298.4 lbs
Last week: 139.8 lbs
This week: 139.9 lbs (I was 138.8 after my run this morning, though!)
Gain of 0.1 lbs

The buffet parties - yep, I'm with you!
I tend not to eat before I go, just because I do enjoy the variety at the majority of the parties. But, I do put enough protein varities on my plate to make it interesting, a veggie or two for color, and then one little scoop of a salad/pasta/potato item. Save the dessert for later figuring if I get engaged in enough conversations, I'll lose interest in the dessert(s).
I also munch salty/carb laden things when I drink socially, so I try to avoid it by designating my self as the driver that night.
It is a time to enjoy the company of others above all else, though. I try to remember that and the fact that even if the people at the party don't know I was a previous MO person, we are all examples to eachother. People still observe what you eat. Let that be a motivator. I have been to a party where I watched someone consume a plate full of food only to run to the bathroom and come back looking pale and tired. No thanks! It's not worth it to me. Moderation is still the key. And social situations typically drive me to eat better anyhow.
Best of luck!

Even pre-op I never had a problem over eating at parties. I'm such a blabbermouth that I'm usually too busy socializing to bother with the food. However if I am hosting the holiday party I have to deal with all the leftovers in the fridge later. That's what can get me in trouble.
Since I am a recent post-op eating anything naughty will probably result in me running to the bathroom to hurl 15 minutes later... looking all pale and tired. LOL! My strategy this year is to drink a protein shake right before the parties, then there won't be room for more than a nibble of anything.

After Thanksgiving I was about the same ( up .2) but then down 3 this week, so I am OK with that. Water weight from the extra saltiness I think.
I'm torn about this holiday season. On the one hand, at 6 months out or so things are slowing down for me and I want to maximize my loss in this first year. That means sticking to it over the holidays. I was hoping for onederland by the new year, but we'll see- that's about 7 pounds or so away at this point. Doable...
BUT I kind of want to lay off a bit and relax and have a bit here and there... so we'll see... I'm at a point where I can find something to eat pretty much anywhere, and still focus on protein first, and my restiction is still great. It's more the snacking and treats I struggle with. Going to make sure I have water mixins in my purse as well as protein bars when I'm out.
Good luck to us all finding just the right balance!
