Dr. Baker? Dr. Ikramuddin? Dr. Buchwald?

Hi Jennifer,
I had my VSG with Dr. July, Dr. Bakers associate. I love the program at Unity, and can't speak for other hospitals programs. Unit is a Bariatric Center of Excellence. The nurses at Unity are wonderful! I just like all the support I get there and I really feel encouraged to stay active in the many ways I can get help. I'm part of the team that speaks to potential patients in the Tuesday informational meetings. I was the 12th Sleeve performed at Unity, but the actual mechanics of performing the Sleeve uses the same method they use to close a RnY or DS. My surgery was orthoscopic.

If you have any questions concerning the VSG, I'd be happy to share my experiences with you and answer what I can.

Good luck on your journey, no matter what surgery you chosse!

Either surgery, I'd pick Dr. B. but I am biased. I interviewed 8 surgeons & programs (including Unity and Dr. Baker) in MN when I was making my decision, and I adored Dr. B. out of all of them. He was honest, compassionate, understands morbid obesity for the disease it is, and is a true pioneer, especially with the Duodenal Switch.

I had my open DS with him almost 3 years ago, and I have not regretted a single moment! Best decision ever. And I never worried about my open scar or the healing. Dr. B's team did such a beautiful job, I have been to various medical appointments since and they have all commented on what a "beautiful" scar it is and always have asked who the surgeon was. They've almost always heard of Dr. Buchwald, too. Makes me feel re-assured that I made a good decision.

Any specific DS questions, please feel free to PM me!

Thanks everyone for your responses!  I'm scheduled to go to a seminar at the U of M on Dec. 23rd, and to meet with Dr. Ikramuddin.  I loved the staff at Unity, and this will be a hard decision to make, however the more research I do, the more I lean towrad the DS, which I would then head to the U of M for sure.  I know Dr. Ikramuddin does surgery at Abbott, but I really have a great deal of respect for the U of M as my son was there at the pediatric hosptial for gastroentestinal issues that Children's wouldn't even talk to his doctor about.  The U was the only one to offer to take his case.  So I really trust them.  ANYWAYS,

I have a sleep study scheduled for Dec. 26th and am sadly hoping that I have sleep apnea as I have no other "severe enough" co-morbities to qualify for insurance coverage.

Hope everyone is doing well!!

I am scheduled for the seminar at the U of M (Fairview) on Dec. 21st.  I'm still torn between Buchwald and Ikramuddin for my DS, but I'm leaning towards Dr. I since he does laproscopic.  Another factor might be the length of common channel that each Dr. does, as I would prefer 100+ cm (I'd rather lose less weight than chance being too malnurished).

The only thing that still worries me about the DS (and to a lesser extent all WLS) is the vitamin regemin and blood tests.  I'm trading zero current perscriptions (aside from my CPAP) for 30 pills a day and blood tests every 3 months after I get the DS.  That's a big responsiblity for the rest of my life (50+ years?).
