Ok, so here it goes.  I am starting out on my journey for weight loss surgery.  I have found a clinic, and had my first 2 appointments.  I have yet to meet my surgeon as I a told that happens after I lose half of the 20 pounds.  At my last appointment I was down 6 pounds, which is exciting, but I am very nervous about having this done.  I am also excited about the possiblities this new tool will give me.  Any tips for the new guy on how to control the snacking urges?

Welcome to the MN Board!!

Congrats too on making a life changing decision. Be sure to follow your doctors orders and everything will just fall in to place.

Good Luck.

To avoid snacking urges, your best bet is to remove radios and televisions from your home.  Okay, so that's not realistic, but you'll notice that the closer you get to surgery, the more frequently they play junk food commercials.  It's as if they have a direct line to OH to see when people are about to have WLS, and they pour on the temptation!  *******s.

Make a list of things you like or need to do.  Physical activities get extra points, but anything that doesn't involve food counts.  If you want a bowl of ice cream, go for a walk.  If you want chips, clean your garage instead.  If you keep thinking about that leftover lasagne in the fridge, do some laundry and marvel at how huge your clothes are going to seem when you're SKINNY!  Just find things to distract yourself.  Don't hang out near your kitchen - if you find the majority of your time is spent there, get better aquainted with your livingroom or bedroom or any other room you have, 'cuz the closer your are to the source of your urges, the louder they become!

Good luck with everything ~ and keep coming here!  It's not the most active board these days, but there are plenty of us that 'lurk' here on a daily basis, and will be most happy to help you out with advice, perspective, and a smack upside the head when needed!

The snack monster is a tough one.  Darla is right, look for substitutions.

It's a good idea to start on moving your body now.  You will need to embrace exercise in your new lifestyle, so do what you can, even if it's just a walk around the block.  That's where I started.

By the way, you are welcome to join us at South of the River coffee group.  Tomorrow it is at the Panera in Burnsville Center at 8:30am.  Pre-surgery, post-surgery, at goal--doesn't matter where you are on the journey, you are welcome!!

Congratulations, and hang on for the ride!
