Pregnancy after Duodenal Switch

I am currently going for the Gastric Bypass but have wanted the Switch instead. My surgeon said if I want children after the surgery, it will be difficult to maintain the pregnancy with the Switch due to the nutrient loss. I have not found anything online agreeing with this. Does anyone have any idea about this? Please and Thank you!!

I really don't know anything about this so shouldn't even be offering a comment. There's a lady on the VSG board who's about 6 1/2 months pregnant. She and baby are doing extremely well. This probably doesn't mean a thing since you only mention RNY or DS and not VSG.

I have known a couple of women who have had pregnancies post-RNY - they did struggle a bit to eat enough to be sure the baby was getting adequate nutrition. Still, both had healthy babies!

I have been hearing more lately, tho, about how DS patients do struggle with nutrition issues the further out they get. Heaven knows I'm no doctor, but I do have a dear friend who is a certified bariatric nurse clinician and knows a LOT about all the types of WLS - she says the DS carries long-term risks that other types of WLS do not (I personally can't explain why...). It seems DSers tend to believe their surgery is the best, and those that I know have been very successful with their weight loss - some have perhaps lost TOO much. I just hope the long-term issues aren't serious.

I would listen to your surgeon - having babies is not something you want to gamble with.

If you haven't already, I would post this in the DS forum, there are several DS moms who periodically post there, and they seem to be doing well. From what I understand, there are vitamin considerations, but it is not impossible to have a pregnancy after the DS. Also, there are several post-DS moms on the duodenalswitch.com forums: http://www.duodenalswitch.com/forum/ and a few kicking around in the pregnancy after WLS  forum: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/postop_pregnancy/

Recently Dr Schwartz is looking into doing the DS and when I asked his assistant why now and not before it was due to how much follow up is required and now they have Dr Sund to do the extensive follow up with patients. I am almost 4yrs post op RNY and currently 14 weeks pregnant and all of my labs have and continue to come back well. Do lots of research and get a 2nd opinion if necessary. Eventual pregnancy was part of why I had my RNY as I had/have pcos so I knew getting pregnant someday wasn't going to be an easy task at the weight I was at pre-op.
