Feeling full?
Hi everyone,
I've been reading the boards about feeling full. Not only do I not feel full [which I didn't pre-op until I overate] I've figured out that when my NU said it was ok to eat 1 cup of food, I ate that amount w/o really paying a lot of attention to whether I was 'full' or not. That's what she said I could eat, so I ate it.
Last night, I indulged, which I have to admit, I have rarely done post-op. I don't think I was feeling sorry for myself, but I do know I was not satisfied with what I had chosen for supper, causing me not to eat all of it resulting in eating some tortilla chips and 4 GS cookies. As soon as I started feeling nauseous, I stopped eating.
I know my GI tract has been 'numb' for years....it's hard for me to detect true hunger. Post-op I have had some true hunger pains, but historically, if my stomach gets empty, I get diarrhea from the built-up acid. [even with taking Prilosec daily] This has improved post-op, but I always have that in the back of my mind that I'll get diarrhea once again.
Will my gut 'un-numb'? Will I be able to sense fullness? I don't seem to have the cues of hiccups or watery eyes, etc. I do feel the burping sometimes, but I'm not able to tell if that means I'm full or just burping. SIGH.
Are there other 'cues' I should be looking for? If I don't 'think' I'm full, it's more likely I'll want to eat more even tho I might not eat more.
Am I making any sense at all? How have you all learned when you're full.
Thanks for you input. I wish I #1: didn't live quite so far away from the support groups; #2: didn't teach on Saturdays so I could attend support groups occassionally. It would be wonderful to meet you all. It'll happen sometime!

If I were you I would talk to my bariatric nurse, go in and see her.....
My heart goes out to you, because this 1st year is the "Honeymoon" year......You need to figure this out asap....And make good food choices now, get into a habit of not eating things you shouldn't.....I've seen too many people eat things they shouldn't and sabotage themselves and not lose, and then regain weight....
It may come down to re-training your body.....Just give yourself that 1/4c. of food, and chew, chew, chew.......When that's gone, that's it....Then 30-45min. later drink, drink, drink.....
Good luck....Kelly

I know how you feel. I also don't feel fullness. When I questioned Dr. Laguna about it he said to make sure to measure out my 1 cup of food, and eat only that. He said that feeling full may come with time, or I may just have to watch my portion sizes.
I don't have much advice for you, but I do understand where you're coming from.
Good luck!

Hi Leda,
You know, like you I had the RYN -for me I did feel fullness before surgery. Now I still do but it is VERY different. Before I would feel fullness right in the middle of my midsection and the fullness would wrap around to my sides. Now I feel it only on my left side almost directly under my rib cage. I am still only able to eat at most -1/2 cup. I don't feel sick, and it doesn't hurt, but I definitly need to stretch out or stand when I have had enough. You talked about feeling hungry. That I do not feel, I only feel funny in my pouch (on the left side) when I need to drink water. If you have eaten and you feel like you need to eat -again. Try to do water for another 1/2 hour or so (keep sipping -constantly), then if the feeling doesn't go away, wait the 1/2 hour to eat. Otherwise, you could go down that path of over eating. Do you have a cell phone Leda? Maybe we could have a chat? I can chat for free on weekends and after 7 pm on weeknights. Please feel free to call: kim (651)403-0835
