Due to new study showing high morbidity rates of people moderately overweight, there is a new or renewed interest in lowering requirements for WLS. If history is any indication, this process could take several years to be addressed, but who knows?

Very interesting, Paul - thanks for sharing.

I find it interesting that there is such an obvious economical factor involved in Allergan's bringing this proposal forward.  And I found myself wondering - why just for the band?  Granted, we each have our reasons for the type of surgery we've had or considered (band vs. RNY vs. DS, etc...), but each has benefits that may not be as significant with the other types of surgeries.  So to focus on lowering the threshold for just the band seems a bit lop-sided to me.  If  they will be considering the health benefits in addition to weight loss, it seems they should be looking at ALL WLS options when considering changes to the guidelines.

But, that's just me.  I'm happy with my RNY.  I could, unfortunately, see my daughter looking into the possibility of WLS some day - so of course, I would encourage her to look to the bypass vs. band - mostly because I know her own personality is such that maintaining a band is not in line with her character.  Hmm...  come to think of it, the nut doesn't fall far from the tree.

While I can't help but feel this is self-serving on Alergan's part in order to up sales, my PCP physician supports my efforts to pursue WLS even tho I'm what is considered a "light weight". She says WLS surgery should be made available to those, like me, with a BMI of 30-35. I have to agree with her.
