I live in Pennsylvania but my Husbands insurance is covered by BlueCross of Minnesota. What I would like to know,  has anyone had problems getting plastic surgery covered with this insurance and if so what kind of procedure did you have? Iam looking to getting a panni done however I have not had any success in doing so under my insurance in Pennsylvania.

I am only two months out from my surgery and have never had plastic surgery. But I did inquire about this with my Bariatric surgeon and was told that Insurance companies view plastic surgery as cosmetic and not medically necessary and that they will not cover plastic surgery unless it is a medical matter that is effecting your health, which will usually require a letter from your surgeon to the Insurance Company.

Most of the women that I have spoken with that has had or plan on having plastic surgery have had to pay out of pocket and have gone to surgeons in Brazil, Europe, or Mexico to have the procedure performed...apparently it's much cheeper in other countries and you get more bang for your buck (so to speak).

Good luck and I hope you find an insurance company that covers plastic surgery. If you do, be sure to let the rest of us know too! Take Care!

I've known several people who have had some version of a TT or panni post WLS.  And yes, the majority have had other medical reasons that either made it necessary, or made it very easy to slip in a little 'nip/tuck'.  Hernias are fairly common.  Some have serious rash issues, and still can't get approved.  A couple of women with significant pannis were approved, with the help of a compassionate surgeon, but usually there does have to be a valid, medical reason.

Personally, a little over 2 years post-WLS, I had to be opened up to have some female issues takeen care of, and a hernia repaired. God bless my doc, he graciously made 5# of below-the-belt ugly go away.  'Excision of redundant skin to aid in wound healing'.  It ain't purdy, I have a couple of little 'swirlies' at either end of the incision (I refer to them affectionately as "Thelma" and "Louise"),  but it beats the spare flubber I used to sport down there!
