Fagerness

Fagerness

Fagerness, pronounced Foggerness (with emphasis on the first syllable) by my paternal grandmother, is a village in central Norway from which her parents immigrated to the United States in the 1880’s.  It also aptly describes my bicycle commuting experience this morning, even if it isn’t a real word.  Over the weekend a wet, heavy snowfall accumulated to a depth of 5 or 6 inches.  Temperatures subsequently rose above freezing yesterday and then dropped to 27 degrees over night.  Dressed for those weather conditions, I found the roads were clear and mostly dry as I pedaled, with patches of dense fog hugging the ground.  It was very strange and yet wonderful to be traveling through a thick blanket of fog while seeing a sky full of stars twinkling overhead.

As I rode I pondered the fact that in the past I would have been driving my pick-up, cursing the fog as I hurried to my destination and probably belching because I had just eaten an enormous breakfast, heedless of the hiatal hernia that periodically gave me indigestion.  I would not have noticed the stars shining above the fog, the cold, smooth dampness of the air, or the periodic whiffs of wood smoke along my route.  Weight loss surgery, which unexpectedly included repair of that hernia, along with an ongoing commitment to exercise, afforded me an opportunity to enjoy something unusual today, which has left me smiling and grateful for the experience.

Connie:

You are always so nice when you reply to my posts, even when I start them from a decidedly off-beat place like I did today.  Thank you for that!!

The fact that you remembered to "notice" it is a testament to all that you have achieved!  It's cool that you are able to be in the moment and enjoy it.

RP - I've been noticing much more positive coming from you lately!  Ups and downs are a normal part of life.  I'm glad to see your current emphasis on the "ups" - such as the natural beauty of this world!

You are always fun to read, anyway!
