Who Let the Dog(s) Out?

I continue to ride my bike to and from the nearest commuter train station most work days even though it is now November in Minnesota.  There are fewer daylight hours and it continues to get colder, yet there is something comforting about being able to enjoy seeing the stars through my frosty breath as I pedal along.  In the 8 months or so that I have started my morning commute on my bike, I have quietly come up on unsuspecting rabbits, deer, cats, birds, raccoons, possums, snakes, and one large skunk at very close range, which have all scattered when they suddenly realized I was nearby.  This morning I rode up on a large German Sheppard, who didn’t exactly take kindly to my sudden presence.  He barked and gave chase.  I yelled at him to go away in my most commanding voice, which had little effect.  Since I carry nothing with which to defend myself, I took off, pedaling furiously as my adrenaline spiked.  It soon became no contest and the dog turned back to whatever nocturnal wanderings I had interrupted.

After I caught my breath I had to laugh to myself as I thought about how something like that never would have happened before weight loss surgery…..I couldn’t have ridden my bike 5 miles, I wouldn’t have been riding in the dark, even with lights and reflective clothing, I wouldn’t have tried to outrun a dog, and even if I had managed to do so, it would have taken a half hour for me to catch my breath.  I would have been driving my pick-up truck, eating something unhealthy and might very well have hit that beautiful animal.  It occurred to me how lucky we both were this morning that I decided back then to make some significant changes in my life.

Awesome Wow moment RP!

Also, if you go to a store that carries supplies for police/security/post office workers, you could get something that is small and would be easy for you to carry on your bike so if you do come up on an unsuspecting animal you would be somewhat prepared.  I know the postal carriers carry a pepper spray that is designed for dogs and will not hurt them other than the temporary sting to their eyes.
