Brand New to This
Hi everyone,
My name is Paula and I am having a RNY on Oct 28 at Methodist. Today is Day 1 of my protein liquid diet. I am married with 3 active (hungry) boys and am wondering how I'm going to make it through these next 10 (9 1/2!) days.
I have already learned a lot by reading this forum ,but now it feels real to me. Yikes!
Thank you,
Paula

Paula,
You CAN do this! I also had Tom Jones for my surgeon at Methodist. They are great there :D
Remember you are investing in those boys while you take care of yourself. Today, while going on an outing with my son (22) who was in town for the weekend, I was told that he had been afraid - as was my other 2 children 18 & 20 - that I was going to die from obesity. They had real feelings of real fear for my life. And here I had been thinking that I was minding my own business and only hurting myself with my eating! The ones I loved the most were hurting because of me.
OK...so for now it is odd, weird, unnatural to only do the liquid diet. It does get easier. Honest.
Congratulations on making this incredible decision. You are in for a journey that is full of loads of smiles. It won't always be easy, but it is so very worth it all!! It truly is :D

Hi Paula.....I am going through Methodist also. I have Healthpartners and I have to do the Journeywell Phone Calls. My last call is on Wed and my paperwork can finally get submitted to insurance. My Question is how long once your paperwork was submitted and approved did it take you to see Jones? How does the Protein Liquid look like? Give me some ideas. I am nervous about the Diet but I know I can do it I want this surgery so bad
Thanks everyone for your kind words and encouragement!
Tam Tam, I was able to get in to see Dr. Jones about 2 weeks after I was approved. You will get a book detailing everything, pre and post op. It first lists Carnation Instant Breakfast with skim milk, 5-6 times per day with other calorie free, non-carbonated beverages in between. But I was told by my nutritionist that Slim-Fast, Ensure, Boost, any of the high-protein drinks would be ok. She also said sugar free jello and popsicles help vary the diet a little.
I'm not going to lie, this has been a long day, but Day 1 is over! Best of luck to you!! It is exciting when you get your "date."
Any other veterans out there with advice for this pre-op deal, I'll listen.
Thanks!

Congrats on getting close to your re-birthday!
Everyone says the first 3 days are the worst. I suppose they can't all be wrong, but here's how I look at the LD. I LOVED IT!!! I have NEVER had more CLARITY as far as what I could put in my mouth. ENJOY THAT! Look at it as the easiest 'diet' you'll ever be on! Because although your tool does the majority of the work for you at first, you will NEVER have it any simpler than this - If you can drink it, you're good! (Of course, you want to avoid excessive sugar and carbonation, and NO, brownie batter is NOT a liquid.)
I know I'm a little unique in this, but I really loved the LD. It was very black and white. Now, not so much. I can and too often DO eat things I know I shouldn't. My own stupidity hard at work there.
I remember two moments during my LD that literally SCARED ME - once, when I was clearing the dinner dishes, I went into auto-pilot and licked a bit of cream of mushroom soup off my thumb - INCLUDING A DREADED MINI MUSHROOM NUGGET!!! And I also had a cube of communion bread the Sunday before my surgery - YIKES!!!
It's all in your attitude. And you have the power to pick and choose what that will be. GOOD LUCK!!!

Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
Hi Paula,
I'm going to try this again, I just typed a long note to you and it didn't post for some reason!!
Congratulations on coming this far....you've worked hard and jumped through all of the hoops. Just take it one hour or minute at a time if you need to. Remember you have wonderful friends and family who would love to support you on this journey so lean on them! If you're asked "what can I do" say you can drop off a meal. You have 4 boys to cook for and I'm sure you're not going to feel much like cooking or preparing food for a while so take the help! Some even find doing Let's Dish prior to surgery works too.
Call me anytime as there are no dumb questions. Also remember there is great support both on here and at Saturday coffee too.
I can't wait to watch and support you on this wonderful new adventure!
I'm proud of you!!!
