2 weeks out and I need help

So....I am already on a stall (but I am ok with that as I know it happens to everyone). Finally seen my doctor and the appointment did not go as expected. Here are so of the things that concerning me.

Goal Weight: My doctor said I will probably only loss 100 max. I was hoping to loss a total of 125 but he said this probably won't happen.

Next food stage: My doctor told me to go ahead and eat wehaever I can handle. Most people I know went through all the stages. I asked him why it seems like I can eat whatever...he said because he made my stoma bigger. Ugh...what does this mean?

Vits and calcium: He wants me to wait 2 more weeks before starting any of these.

I am so confused now. Yesterday I was able to eat a small portion of fish, fat free tatar sauce with a little cheese and it went down just fine. Should I be waiting to eat stuff like this? Doctor said it was ok but I really want to make the best out of these next few heavy losing months.

Thanks Friends!

First, let me just say that you looked FANTASTIC at coffee on Saturday!

Second, your body is probably in shock from the surgery and is concentrating on recovering and repairing itself.  The weight the very first couple of weeks comes off a little slower than it does any other time because of this.  Don't worry so much about the weight loss right now (I know easy for me to say) and concentrate more on getting back on your feet.

Third, your body will lose however much it feels is necessary...this could be more or less than 100lbs.  Don't worry about it at this point and just make sure you take care of yourself by following your eating plan and excercising as much as possible and it will all work itself out.

Lastly, My doctor didn't tell me that I could eat what I wanted this early on, but my friend's doc did.  Both of us have lost a significant amount of weight and are doing what we can to keep it that way.  I would suggest following what your team tells you to follow and do what feels right for you.

Sometimes doctors play various head games with us, perhaps thats what yours is doing?

For example, one of my first visits, I was told NOT to set a number goal for my weight - because my body will stop where it feels it needs to be.  If that's 5# short of some random number I came up with for myself, well, I've set myself up to frustrated and disappointed - forgetting how far I had come!  Makes sense.

I'm not saying it makes sense that your doc said you'll only lose 100, frankly - that would kind **** me off and make me that much more determined to lose th .... Hey, wait a minute -  COULD HE BE PLAYING A HEAD GAME WITH YOU???

As for what to eat?  If he gave you the green light, just proceed with caution.  Be diligent about chewing the living daylights out of anything you eat, and do NOT try new things when you're out in public or anywhere that an unpleasant reaction would be hard to deal with.  Just be sure to eat PROTEIN FIRST, get all your water in, and exercise as best you can!  Your tool and your body will take care of the rest!

My doctor did NOT set a weight goal for me but asked what I thought I should head for. He gave the stats that most people lose up to 75 % of their excess body fat, so he worked more in line with percentages, rather than numbers. Lo and behold, I am 7+ months out and I have lost 75%, BUT I have just about stopped. Partially due to some old habits coming in, but also because everything is healed up and I am not as satified with 6 ounces of food as I was on the way down.

As far as eating, I was put on solids before I really wanted to go. I was happy with the liquids. The first several weeks were tough because it was a learning curve to figure out what I could tolerate. It had as much to do with texture as anything else. I could eat 4 ounces of softer food, but eating slowly and reacting to my body signals, I sometimes would stop with 1.5 -2.0 ounces of dense protein. And there was a big difference between some foods such as pork or chicken breast vs hamburger. I definitely could NOT tolerate any breads or rice. They swelled up with liquids and made me feel STUPID for trying.

Everybody is different, the key is to eat slow and stop before you get stuffed (even if it is a small quantity.) There is no feeling such as you over did it. Your eyes still think old quantities but your new body knows different. So be careful with quantities and texture, set a realistic goal and stay true to you goals for success. Weight is not the only measurement, I am enjoying my bones and smaller pant sizes. I still use my original belt and love that the tip is now past my spine. Oh, I am watching my weight, but you should also watch your exercise, as a loss of muscle mass can creep up on you. So EXERCISE regularly.

Yep, stalls happen....Don't worry.....

I hate it when Doctors set a firm goal or say this is all you'll lose, grrrrr.....For me, we both figured out a goal that was attainable, I did hit that goal, but have gained some back......

He said eat whatever? WTH? He made your Stoma bigger? I think I'd find out how big he made it....I can ask my surgeon how big he made mine and we can compare? OMG.....Don't worry though, the tool is there.....

I wasn't eating solid food till I was 5 weeks out, but every plan is different......I went through a liquid stage, then pureed, then soft, then solid......I lost a lot of weight that 1st 2 months.....I was eating 2T. of food up until 2 months to give you an example......If I were you I would eat in stages.....Your pouch is still healing.....

Maybe try cottage cheese, soft boiled egg, yogurt.....Protein shakes.....

Hey there - it was great meeting you at coffee Saturday!  Hope to see you again.

Now - keep in mind - EVERYONE is different and seems like all our docs have their own plan too.

I say - drink - drink - drink - and rememeber, when not losing the weight, you are changing in your measurements!!!

I was on a 2 week liquid diet prior to surgery, and 1 week post op.  I was then told to move to pureed and see the surgeon at 2 weeks post op.  At that time, I was told to introduce things SLOWLY into my diet, and to think of it this way.  My pouch is like a baby and you would not throw full meats to a newborn baby!  I used my own judgement and slowly added shrimp - chicken - tuna - pretty much what I could handle and only 1 at a time.  So far, I have had no issues with food, other than SUGAR!!!  I cannot tolerate more than 8g per serving and I watch it very closely.

Sip, sip, and walk walk and use your common sense judgement and you will do great.  We have all been there, and are here to help you out.

Talk to you soon

Kelly

Like everyone else said.. 2 weeks out your body is going to stall.. it's normal.. everyone has it happen. Your body had a serious overload of anesthesia & meds for surgery, a 180 in food in the last 2 weeks, and is in healing mode!

My surgeon told me that the most important thing in the first 12 weeks is staying hydrated and healing. As long as every meal is protein you'll lose the weight you're supposed to in those first 12 weeks.. but the most important thing is that you take it slow, you do what you're supposed to, and you let yourself heal. So let your body do what its going to do.. believe me the process totally works! Let it stop, take a breath, regain strength, and you'll slide down the weightloss scale again before you know it hun!
