Insurance Question (GAMC)

Hello, I am wondering if anyone has been approved with just only General Assistance Medical Care (or GAMC). I live in Northern MN and have only that insurance (low income, disabled).

Can someone tell me the process, if everything was paid for?

I would like to have the Duodenal Switch, but have a feeling it wont be covered, so I am expecting a RNY in the future. I have not began the process yet, just want some input before I do this.

Thank you in advance!!!

Either surgery is a tool to help you achieve your health goals, but it is important that you are able to embrace whatever procedure you have as there are challenges in each and you don't want to be remorseful of your choice.

I believe yes it is covered. Look at your Booklet that they sent you. I understand you have GAMC but what Insurance did you pick. They all cover it but at different degrees you have to do stuff. So we do need to know which insurance to really answer ....Healthpartners, Blue Cross, Medica...Which one

I will have to look at the stuff my worker gave me. I only have GAMC, no HMO's like Medica or MNCare, because I am disabled and Medica was taken away. So straight medical for me. If I am correct, I get Medicare after 2 years of being on SSI. But I am only about 1 year in. I am 25 years old, 5'5 and 275lbs.

I had my revision from lapband to RNY with straight MA (GAMC) 12/09.  But I'm not sure if that's different because my band failed (my esophagus dilated and we weren't able to inflate my band again)....plus they have changed GAMC a LOT since then, I'm lucky I was able to find a job this year that I get benefits through......

LapBand Placed: 12/5/2006
Port Revision: 6/13/2007                                                                                                          Conversion to Gastric Bypass: 12/16/2009

I have a question. I know this will vary, but since we have the same insurance, how long from start to finish did it take to get your approval or surgery date? I'm starting my dietician visits next month, so I will be done with them in April, and am hoping at the very least to have the surgery by end of summer but while school is out still. I know I might not get that lucky though.

Thanks! I am hoping it hasn't changed too much. I want the Duodenal Switch, but I think I might just have to wait until I start receiving Medicare next year. :-/
