Pre-Op and Learning

So I was reading a booklet that I need to read before the surgery and I read that after surgery I will need to have 1 ounce of water every 15 minutes. OMG! I know it's not a lot of water, but every 15 minutes, that's crazy stuff!

I am also looking at the different protein shakes and stuff, and maybe I haven't gotten far enough into the book, but how will I be able to have 1 protein shake when my pouch will be so small? Correct me if I am wrong but won't I only be able to have small amounts of liquid at a time?

Any advice would be great!

Heidi,

Congrats on having the surgery.....And Dr. Jeff is awesome, great choice in a Doctor....

It is hard to get in the water at 1st.....Just do your best....

As far as protein shakes, I was naughty, I couldn't stomach them....But in the past 1-2 years found protein powders that I like.....UNJURY and CHIKE.....You can go on chike.com and get free samples of all there flavors....

When is your surgery?

Thank you - and I have just met him once at the introduction meeting and he seemed very nice.

I guess doing all of this reading, seems a bit overwhelming, but I know it needs to be done. I will have to clarify with the nurse about when to start the applesauce type foods. In this book (given to me by them) said only liquid for three weeks, but when I was at the meeting, I swear they said just one week of all liquids. One week seems doable, but 3? Yeah, that maybe more of a challenge. I do not know when my surgery is - not that far. I will have my 3 meetings finished up with the counselor by Oct 6 and my nutritionist is on the 20th of September. Once those are done, that is when Dr Baker will submit a request to my insurance company. I'm expecting early 2012, but we will see!

I had started a protein diet before surgery and was surprised when my nurse told me I had to start on more solid foods. I was doing just fine on the liquids.

The deal is that you will be having different priorities post surgery and you won't be as "physically" hungry as before. Post surgery you will find that your first priority is "pouch friendly" meaning that it doesn't hurt and won't get plugged. Liquids run through a bit better and that is why there is a progression to solid foods.

The other item is that it takes about six months for the process of healing. After it is all healed, you will be able to tolerate most foods, but in smaller quantities. That is when the real challenge begins, because up to that point, you are REALLY content to follow guidelines, after that yuo have a lot more choices, but some of them could bring in your old life and habits.

Determine early on to follow your doctors recommendations and to focus on being successful for life. This means that there really aren't "sacrifices" only choices. Choose wisely.

Thank you, Paul, for this information.

I am 100% committed to follow doctors orders because I am ready.  I was approved back in 2003 to have WLS, but I chickened out.  Today, is a different story, I am ready to make this change and will do whatever it takes to be healthy for the rest of my life and I am ready to live it!

Good Evening Heidi,

I have the same surgeon as you do! My surgery is scheduled on 10/11. I am reading the same material you are, and am on the same page. I read (lurked) on the main forum, this forum and the RNY forum, and have found some great tips and ideas. Their comments and questions have been useful for me to take back to the NP, NUT and Dr. Baker.

Have fun, lurk around and ask questions.

I hope to meet you soon,

~MM

Hello!!

10/11 - that's less than a month away - congrats!  I saw the shrink or whatever you want to call him today. That was a breeze, but Monday I take the 3 hour test at his office....ugh. I see the nutritionist on Monday as well. The shrink told me today that it's clear that I am not getting enough protein. I am wondering if I should start some shakes now.  Are you doing the protein shakes now?

I read some of your posts and I like that you bought those shorts! :)

I was told the same by the NUT. Added a protein drink in place breakfast and dropped 10 pounds without trying. (Gotta love it.) Now the next 10 have not been as easy.

My take on protein drinks:

Some taste better than others - those with less protein, a bit more carbs/sugars. Pre Made.
The ones that don't taste as good have more protein.

I choose the most amount of protein and suck it up. I read lots of posts about them. In fact, it may be a good idea to create a new post on the main forumn and ask for opinions there! There's no lack of opinions on the main forumn .

The book that Dr. Jeff gave us advises that Iso Pure has 25 g of protein for 1 scoop. I went to GNC and bought Alpine Punch and Vanilla, as well as a bunch of bottles. I prefer the non chocolate and vanilla, but they are indeed tolerable.

The ones that taste AWESOME are the ready made mixes, like muscle milk. I just went to GNC and bought a bunch that have the most amount of protein and least amount of carbs. The Atkins EAS Advantage Carb Controlled (Cub, Target, Wallmart) is good as well.

So, my advice is to try them without spending a fortune. And from what I have read on the posts, our taste buds will change after surgery, so don't stock up too much. (oh well for me!)

I hope I was useful. I may not have the right answers, but I can tell you my experience. It appears to me as if everyone is sooo different!

Have a wondrous day! Hope to meet you at coffee this weekend!

I tried the muscle milk this weekend and it wasn't bad at all.  I started looking at all of the protein drinks at Target this weekend and there are a lot of variations. One of the juices had like 26 grams of sugar! I bought the light muscle milk, it doesn't have as much protein as the non-lite, but it doesn't have any sugar and only 100 calories. I really didn't know which one to go for - I wanted more protein, but I didn't think we were suppose to have sugar.  I see the nutritionist tomorrow so I will ask her. I also have my 2.5 hour test from the shrink. It's going to be a busy day tomorrow. I also walked 3 miles both Saturday and Sunday - I feel proud, but it sure makes me tired. :)

I hope you have a great week and thank you for your thoughts!

at vitalady.com you can order $2 samples of protein powder that you can mix in with water, milk, or make a shake or smoothie out of. I bought three and I plan on getting more so I can get a taste of what I might like forafter surgery
