U of M Fairview day of surgery and other querstions DS surgery
One other thing to think about. My insurance company will cover WLS only if it's performed at a Center of Excellence. Abbott and the U meet that requirement. The designation Center of Excellence means the facility has worked hard for a period of time to reduce death and infection and other complications. So in my case I wouldn't want to go to a hospital about 50 miles away from my home and have it done. They do WLS but it's not what specialize in. It's like having a mamo at the local doctor vs. going to the Mayo's breast center and having it done right.
What I'm trying to say is you're in good hands having your surgery done at a Center of Excellence. It's what they do, it's all they do, and they do it right.

Sorry, I have a lot of balls in the air, trying to get this to come together.
Dr Buchwald is who I am scheduled with on Sept 29th for the seminar. Just received the packet saying if I don't get my medical records to them by then, it will be rescheduled. Ugh, they could have told me to be working on that when I was on the phone with them, doncha think? Sheesh
So one more thing to get done quickly! Hate to go all that way just to be turned away.
What I know for sure is that I need the DS surgery, not any others. Can't see doing this twice!! No revisions in my future for another WLS. I am leaning towards staying with Dr Buchwald as the surgeon. Tuesday surgery day works out well too.
Someone just said "you'll need smaller clothes". I am not even thinking that far ahead yet!
Thank you! Has anyone else had surgery here with Dr Buchwald? It was easy to get a seminar appt with him, I am wondering about a surgery date as I need a specific week or it will have to wait another year possibly.

Smart girl!
Dr. B is the one who taught Dr. I, and either or both are teaching Leslie (and, I believe Kellogg) at the U as well in the DS. 2 great guys who attend a little DS support group here in the metro have Leslie DSes and are doing awesomely.
I personally went with Dr. B because I liked him so much better, and his experience speaks for itself. That said, Dr. I is also an amazing surgeon, and his patients do very very well. I met one of my best friends because she was a Dr. I patient who was supposed to be in the hospital 2 days after me!
I also knew going into this process that on my surgery date, I was 30 and Dr. B was 82- you do the math. I knew that Dr. I would end up doing the bulk of my aftercare, because Dr. B does have to retire eventually, someday! I have dealt with Dr. I in a semi-urgent situation when I was only 2 weeks out, and was very impressed with him. Looking back, I would be very happy with a DS from either one.

I am a "Body by Buchwald" patient and I friggin' love it and him! Pure genius that man. Don't let his age scare you, as Leigh mentioned. Sharper than a tack that man. And his wit and humor and bedside manner is unmatched these days!! Stick with the original. You'll be happy you did.
I never had a surgery prior to my DS and the open incision did not scare me. Dr. B. found a hiatal hernia that he repaired and he also offers free tube tying if you need that sort of thing done. LOL
Almost 2 years out, 170 pounds lost, and I got my self back! I could sing the DS praises all day but I don't want to start a surgery war. haha
Any questions, please PM me.
