I have been thinking about this for a long time.  Finally at a place where I need to do something and in all of my reading, I'm seeing that I need receipts, logs of weight loss plans tried (and failed) and I haven't been a good bookkeeper with this kind of stuff.  Has anyone done this and been approved by insurance without a long history of attempts to lose weight?  HELP!

It's not as hard as you think it is. Depending on your insurance they all have different criteria for approval, the only way to know is to begin the process and just keep plugging away until you give them what they need to approve you!!

I just used approximate dates.  I remembered I did Weigh****chers for the first time in high school so I chose a year.  I knew where I worked when I tried Meridia so I chose a date that was during that time frame.  I don't think it has to be exact.  I am sure I did not remember every attempt to lose weight.  It was just a list of approximations for me.  Don't stress too much about it.  I would not encourage you to lie but I doubt there is any way for them to verify all of your attempts, especially all of those you did w/o organized support or medical supervision.

Robin...I wish you well....hope you can get approval soon.

Most insurance companies are now requiring a least a 6 month supervised weight loss program through a medical doctor. Some require more.

They want you not so much to lose a lot of weight but that you don't gain any in that period of time.

As for your past weight loss attempts...you can take a good guess at what and when you did that. Some insurances say that is enough but not too many anymore. You really do need to call your own insurance company and ask what their specific requirments are. If they do require 6 months it will have to be medically documented.

Good luck....hope it all works out for you!

I did a doctor supervised weight loss program, paid $3000 and still gained it all back when I could eat REAL food.  Does that count?  I can't afford to pay for one of these again.

I appreciate the feedback.  I have another question about weight.  I'm 8 pounds under the weight that would put me at a BMI of 40 which is required by insurance.  I don't want to gain more weight because I would have to lose all the more.  Any suggestions?

Yes that will work....any supervised doctor program is all they want to see. Get a statement from that doctor and you should be good to go!!

As for the weight issue....if you have any co-morbidity's like high blood pressure or diabetes or something the BMI can be lower. However what you need to do is find out how many calories you can consume without gaining any weight. Stay with that figure and you will be okay. (You can google that information.)

Good luck...I wish you the best!!

Robin,

Hi there, I live by Becker......If you want we could meet for coffee and I can explain things to you also....

For me I had to have 6 months documented weight loss plan.....My doctor provided the insurance with years of dieting and failures, even back when Phen-Phen was out, the drug that caused heart issues....

Find out exactly what your insurance wants....Then go see whatever doctor that can show the documentaion....

Thanks for the offer Kelly.  I may just take you up on that.  One question would be what co-morbidities I have and if they are 'good' enough.  Asthma, High Cholesterol, Stress Urinary Incontinence, GERD, Chronic low back pain, Mitral Valve prolapse and Tricuspid valve defect.  I'm afraid that if I go to the doctor now, my BMI will be too low (38.6) and the co-morbidities won't qualify and then I'll be denied.

I'm 44 years old and have cared for everyone else but myself for the last 21 years.  Unfortunately, I'm a nurse and that's my job all day long, so when I get home, I'm spent.  My husband doesn't understand how important this is to me and he sabatoges me when I try to diet (not on purpose but he does none the less).  I need this WLS as a tool so I can be healthy again.   This forum is so helpful to me.  I appreciate all of your help.
