Hair Loss
I lost hair and my hair is baby thin to begin with. I thought for sure I'd have to buy hair at the mall. But, I was the only one who noticed, other than my husband seeing it on my pillow. It quit falling out around 7-8 months and it grew back and is back to normal. I just cut it short and waited it out. I still wear it short because I like it short!
I figured, worst case scenario....I'd rather be bald than fat.

It's better to be imperfectly happy than perfectly unhappy.
The initial starvation shocks your entire system, so hair loss is completely normal in most individuals. Also, you lose hair every single day whether you realize it or not so keep that in perspective, too.
I lost a bit of hair in the 3rd month, but it has grown back and same texture as before. I took no Biotin nor did I use Nioxin shampoo or the like.
If your hair loss does get bad, there's always a different hair style to try, wigs, dye for your scalp, etc. - plenty of options if you need. But don't back down from WLS just because you might or might not lose a little hair. The benefits of being healthy and weighing less far outweigh any hair loss IMHO.

When I first considered WLS and went to PNC's info session, the hair loss issue was actually my biggest concern as far as vanity goes. I've had thyroid issues for years, which had already caused my hair to thin. So the thought of losing MORE was really mortifying! But I had already been taking Biotin and using Nioxin products, so that was already a part of my routine. Does it help? I'm not going to stop taking it to find out.
As for the amount of Biotin, I take one 5,000 mcg capsule a day. (Side note - I had also lost the majority of my eyelashes pre-WLS, when I was taking 1,000 mcg/day. Since I upped my dose to 5,000 mcg/day, my eyelashes have come back very nicely!).
As for the condition of my hair when it started growing back in? It's still fine, but there's quite a bit of it, and where it had been wavy before, it's downright CURLY now!
Figures - when straight is in, mine goes all wingy on me.

Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
I'm nine months out and haven't lost hair. Mine's thin anyway, so I'm glad. I use Nioxin shampoo and conditioner and have no idea if that helped or I was just lucky! I do make sure I get enough protein every day and take all my vitamins and supplements.

I was terrified at the thought of losing my hair, because my whole life my hair was the one thing I loved most about myself. However, I knew it was unavoidable and that it was just hair and it will grow back.
I took supplements called Biotin (super cheap at Walmart and Target) and I can't say if they really helped or just gave me piece of mind, but my hair loss was not very noticeable. I noticed it because I was super anal about it, but nobody else did. I'm a year out and my hair is back to normal.

All very good advice and I can only echo, what everyone has said...but it also made me feel better about my hair loss...I have to admit I felt the same, my two biggest fears were losing hair and having alot of excess skin...
I dont notice chunks of hair on my pillow, but during every shower, before and after as well I have a handful of it...My hair used to be very thick and curly. Now it is real thin, but no one notices but me...I had to cut and layer my hair just to make the visual of the loss of hair every morning seem much less.
I am taking Biotin, but the Dr suggested 100, the pharmisist could only get 300 but I might up it since it sounds so low to everyone elses. I agree...does it work? who knows? I got the shampoo Nioxin - but havent tried it yet, however I was told not to expect results right away anyway.
But I have convinced myself that I am ok with it...I WOULD rather be bald and skinny (healthy & alive) than fat, unhealthy and hairy and on my way to an early grave.
Just keep in mind - others go through it due to cancer treatments, they had no choice and sometimes lose body parts...we had a choice and are losing "body" and gaining a new life - if they can do it - so can I...It IS JUST hair!!
Just do everything right, and everything will work itself out. Hold your head high and look to the end result.
