Hair Loss

Hello all :)

I haven't gotten my surgery yet.  I was thinking that as long as I follow the rules when I do get my surgery, I won't loss hair.  After this weekend I came to the realization this is not true and I'm very scared now!  2 of my Aunts and a guy friend of mine all got bariatric surgery within the last 2 years.  They all said that they followed the rules and all of their hair has become very weak and has thinned.  One of them had VERY thick hair and now it is really thin!  It's been 8 months since his surgery and his hair is not growing.  He got a hair cut right before his surgery and hasn't had one since and it's just about the same length.  Plus he said that when he brushes it, tons of it breaks off into the sink.

I don't mean to upset anyone!  But this is the only place I could think of to go to find out what to think about this!!!!

Please don't hold back and let me know if this happens to most people and if I can control this.

Thank you!

Unfortunately this is just one of the things you'll have to deal with after having WLS. It starts about 3 months out and stops around 9-10 months out. Some people claim biotin works for them, but it didnt' for me. Everyone is different as to how much hair they actually lose. I started with very thin hair and was already on Rogaine before WLS. So I lost a LOT of hair and got comments about it. Most people don't lose enough hair where others can tell.

Losing hair is definitely worth the surgery!

Please spay and neuter your pets!

Sorry to say but it will happen! I noticed it for a good 6 months. But for me I was the only one who could notice. I have think curly hair!! But, to me it seemed like a lot especially when washing my hair. I think the loss is different for everyone so don't fret too much.

I was told that you can not overdose on Biotin. I only took one a day..
The hair loss was totally worth all the other things I gained from having surgery..

Best wishes and good luck to you

Don't let the hair loss discourage you.
I had a lot of hair come out for the first year.  It was on the pillow by morning.
Now at 2 years out.  No more hair loss and back to normal.
Best of Luck and get your WLS.

When your hair stops falling out, and then it starts to grow back, will your hair be the same as it was before it started to fall out?

I'm in the middle of my hairloss.  It's not fun but it really isn't that bad considering the benefits you are gaining from the surgery.  I would do it again in a heartbeat.  Don't let it discourage you!

Sounds like everyone, even the people who have lost lots of hair, are very posative still!  I guess I will just count on having a year of thin hair then.

I still wanted to know if when the hair stops thinning and starts to grow back, will I eventually get my same hair back as I had before surgery?

I am going to take Biotin and of course be sure to get all my protien each day!  I am also planning on getting some good protien packed deap conditioner treatments to do at home once a week to see if that helps the hair not get so brittle.  I'm kind of attached to my hair.  It's one of the only things I have really liked about myself physically for some time now.  Can't wait for that to change :D

Thank you all for you responses!!!!!  I really appreciate it is SO much.  It's a scary thing to be going into and it would be too scary for me if I didn't have people who have already gone through it to talk to about my worries :)

Thanks again!

Dont just assume that you will loose hair ,you might but again you might not. I am two years out, and I never lost a single hair. I did not take any special treatment to prevent it either.

Lisa Marie,

Everyone is different, but most everyone I know that had surgery, lost some hair......From 2 months out till 1 year out, I lost hair, Thank God I had a lot to start with.......And now I'm 2 1/2 years out and if I'm not getting in enough protein, I notice that it breaks off more easily.....So I just keep taking Biotin......I take 7500 mcg. once a day.....I used to take a 5,000 mcg. twice a day.....I think something is better than nothing.....

Good luck, Kelly
