Protien

I am getting my surgery in 3 months.  My question is about how protein works into the process...

I am starting to drink shakes with protein powder now.  Each 8oz shake gets 2 scoops of powder.  Those two scoops contain 20 grams of protein, will one of these shakes a day be enough or how much protein should I be taking in a day to prepare for surgery?  After surgery can I continue to use my protein powder in shakes (of course smaller amounts) or do I have to stop eating protein for a period of time? If so, when can I start drinking the protein shakes again?   I just want to be ready when the time comes and to know how to get as much protein into my daily food intake as possible.  I will also be taking this liquid vitamin

which also contains some protein and lots of other stuff!!!!  Then I am going to be trying to also eat lots of healthy fats but need someone *****ally knows their healthy fats who can list some out for me.  The only ones I know of are avacado and nuts.  What else is there for healthy fats!

Thank you for all your time!!!

Your doctor or dietician will have specifics for you on what you should and shouldn't eat and how much protein you will need. But sure can tell you what mine recommended:

Right away after the surgery they weren't worried about anything but trying to get at least 65oz of fluids in a day..and that is hard for me!  And after a week I was able to add soft foods as tolerated and start and try and get at least 64grams of protein in a day.  Mainly thru the food choices, but with protein shake supplements as needed (which also counts towards your liquids).

It sounds like some people complain that what they were drinking before the surgery they couldn't stand to drink after cause your tastes do change.  Mine changed a little bit, but nothing too noticeable right yet, but only not quite 2 weeks post op also so still experimenting with different things.

Good luck and it is an interesting ride so far!! : )

I eat half a cup of cottage cheese and a third of a cup of sunflower seeds mixed together for breakfast most mornings.  I get 20 grams of protein to start my day, it fills me up, and it is just about the right size for a bariatric meal!  My dietician approves!
