Getting Close!
I would love to hear what people eat for several weeks/months after surgery. Aside from having a very dysfunctional relationship with food, I have a very refined palate and I love flavors so variety will be important. I cant eat anything that has artificial sweeteners like aspartame or xylitol because I can actually taste them and they taste AWFUL to me.
Scoot over folks because I will be joining the losers bench soon!
Hiya Lalamommy -
As far as food - I had to do 2 week pre-op liquid diet. That consisted of pureed soups - that have no noodles or potatoes in them. Along with cream of wheat - sugar free jello, pudding, applesauce and popsicles. NO CAFFEINE - NO SUGAR. It was very structured and necessary - according to my surgeon - to make my liver more pliable for surgery - as they need to move it during laproscopic and he said it would make it way easier on me. So, I followed all his requirments, I dropped 18 pounds in that 2 weeks!
For food afterward - the first week was liquids - broth - protein shakes and WATER. Week 2 was pureed foods again - then Week 3 was soft mushy foods. Pureed foods can be whatever you are creative enough to make. MINUS SUGAR! I have learned to love Splenda - I was not a fan of anything DIET prior to surgery - but I DUMP if I have too much sugar, so I learned real fast to stay away from it. BUT - I can eat almost anything. Chicken is my best friend EVER! as well as chili. I eat everything I can made with chicken breast grilled. I will grill a whole bag and refrigerate them for the week - that way I always have something in case another food does not go well.
Your tastebuds will change - be prepared! Something you love one day will be most horrible the next! It kind of sucks, but you get used to it.
I love to have my food seasoned well - I just make sure I am more aware of what I am using. This is a whole life change - but so worth it. The ride is a wild one, so hang on and be prepared! Come here often - talk to the WONDERFUL people here, they have helped me in my short journey - I am only 10 weeks out but loving my new tool and respecting it too.
Hope to see you soon on this side - and totally making room for you on the loser's bench!

I know they have a 10 lquid diet prior to the surgery that also makes me nervous how I am going to do it.
Good to luck to you and keep me posted me we will be neighbors at the hospital.
Also, does anyone use Ziploc Steamer bags? I use them to put in my microwave for fish, meat, veggies...etc and everythign turns out good. I am currently eating steamed lemon pepper fish fillets (Gortons frozen) and steamed snow pea pods (fresh) YUM!
I've been doing a lot of investigating vitamins and protein shakes, so I can have the supply ready to go. I'd love to share ideas...
